TRACKLIST: Scratch It Out/Bikini Twilight
This is an absolute gem in canon of Nirvana collecting. Calvin Johnson's (of Beat Happening) cult indie label K Records was launched to release his own ecclectic and prolific material, but soon released many landmark US indie releases. One of Johnson's many projects was The Go Team group. The Go Team released one single a month in 1989 and each featured guest musicians; the musical style of these releases varied accordingly.
In July of 1989 there were six musicians: Tamra Ohrmund, Tobi Vali (later of Bikini Kill), Donna Biddle, Louise Olsen, Calvin Johnson himself and a then unknown Kurdt Kobain. Today it can be viewed as a supergroup of sorts given the CVs of the artists involved. It goes with out saying that of all the Go Team singles releases, this is by far the most collectable.
The single is a ONE SIDED pressing, with one sided attractively etched in blue. Both tracks were pressed on one side. The sleeve was hand stamped with the band and label information. I have provided elaborate scans for your delictation....
CONDITION OF VINYL: EXCELLENT+. I have no qualms visually grading this record a VERY STRONG Excellent. The grooves are totally lush, the playing surface is near spotless. There is a tiny spot on the run-in groove which seems to be a tiny scuff, or even just a minor discolouration. On PLAYBACK, the sound is beautiful. 'Scratch It Out's' lurching drums kick in with Kurt's noisy detuned riffage with a gutteral punch not unheard on Swans records! There are no clicks on the track, just one or two on the run in and out grooves. 'Bikini Twilight' is more upbeat, with pop chord progressions similar to the Vaseline's 'Molly's Lips' but played with the ghost of the Shadows pulling the guitarists' strings. The production is still rawkus and sludgy, but still quite uplifting! PLAYBACK grading is thus NEAR MINT. This sounds EXACTLY how it would have had you excitedly rushed it on the turntable in 1989!!!
CONDITION OF SLEEVE: EXCELLENT. The sleeve is in great shape. There are no rips or tears on either the front or rear. The right hand corners have a tiny bit of dog earing, but this seems more like a bit of a lilt rather than an irreversible crease. Check the detailed scans that I have provided for further inspection. This is a totally stunning piece of work and quite possibly one of the rarest Nirvana related items ever legally pressed! A shame to see it go....
