The Jimi Hendrix Experience Axis : Bold As Love A1/B1 1st Mono Press + Original Lyric Insert

This first mono pressing on the Track Record label is absolutely STUNNING!  Having played every track in full I can guarantee the clarity of sound could not be any better.  There are no ticks, clicks, pops, jumps or static and the power and depth of the audio is also on another level.  The classic 'Bold As Love' is a case in point, the playback is spectacular.  This is a FINAL UPGRADE archive pressing I am 100% confident in saying.

The vinyl is visually stunning with no marking and rarely have I seen such a pristine looking example.  It has clearly not been played very much - there is minimal spindle wear and there is actually still some vinyl flecking around the S2 label!

The iconic cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear and the original lyric insert is superb, only very light creasing and no marking.  The original inner is in excellent shape also.  A STUNNING complete 'package'!

Visual description

The vinyl is in superb condition and retains an immaculate glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  I can only locate a small number of very faint sleeve removal hairlines under a strong light and there is no 'bag rash' or groove wear to be seen.  The run out grooves are super clean and the Track Record labels are unmarked with only minimal spindle wear.  As stated there is still some 'flecking' on the S2 label.  A stunning example and rarely seen as clean as this!

Play grading  

The first thing you notice is just how clean the run in on S1 is, there is no background at all.  'EXP' then plays with stunning clarity - there is not even a single dust tick whilst the interviewer is talking and then Hendrix's response is just as clean.  The 'feedback' section plays with impeccable quality and this opening number easily grades as Mint - an easy grade to give!

'Up From The Skies' plays to the same high end standard with no intrusion.  The vocal is perfect and the accompanying music has no background - a relatively quiet track and yet the clarity of sound cannot be faulted.  Another Mint track.

The 'heavy' intro on 'Spanish Castle Magic' is 'as new' and Hendrix's opening vocal is just as strong.  From then on it plays with a clarity, power and depth that is second to none.  There is no distortion and it is already patently obvious that this vinyl has only been lightly played.  You do not get get sonic quality like this from a heavily played record!  His guitar work here is spectacular and there is no distortion on the top end.  The fade is perfect also.  Mint

The intro on 'Wait Until Tomorrow' plays perfectly and the first verse and chorus have no intrusion either, not one tick etc.  It continues to play with sublime clarity through every section and there are no negatives.  The audio is crystal clear although I will grade as Mint- as there are a couple of minor static ticks right at the end of the fade out!

'Ain't No Telling' plays with great power and definition throughout and again there is no interference.  It doesn't last long of course and Mint is well deserved.

The intro on the classic 'Little Wing' plays with exceptional clarity and I only picked up a couple of barely audible dust ticks.  The first verse is 'as new' and the audio has real depth and warmth here.  The next verse is just as good and the remainder is faultless.  Each note is so crisp and clean - you can hear each Glockenspiel note to perfection!  Mint

I know this is already sounding a little repetitive but the intro on the classic 'If Six Was Nine' plays like it has never seen a turntable before!  The same applies to the first vocal and it continues to impress on every level.  Genuine power and then the brief silent section is indeed 100% silent - the following 'spoken' vocal is flawless and then the mid instrumental plays with great clarity for a final track.  There is no 'muddiness' to the sound and if there is any inner groove distortion I did not notice it!  Superb backing from Redding and Mitchell here and right through to the end it plays with STUNNING precision.  Perhaps just a tiny hint of distortion on this final section but in a sense distortion is too harsh a word for it.  It is totally non-intrusive and still plays fantastically well.  It's just what you expect on a mono record being played through a stereo set up.  A Mint- conclusion to the side.  The entire side has no ticks, clicks, pops or static and 'as new' is an accurate description.

'You've Got Me Floating' plays with superb audio from the get go.  Every section plays as per S1 - it is a powerful track and yet the sonic quality not affected in any way, the playback is STUNNING!  With no interference Mint is an easy grade to give.

The intro from Hendrix on 'Castles Made Of Sand' plays with great depth and clarity and his opening vocal has no background either.  It continues in the same way - a 'quieter' track of course so no hiding place if there was any interference but... there isn't any!  The clarity is exceptional from the first note to the last and yep Mint is again deserved.

'She's So Fine' as you now come to expect plays with genuine quality and no interference.  Not one fault this is Mint from start to finish.  Redding would be pleased!!

The psychedelic intro on 'One Rainy Wish' plays beautifully with no intrusion and the opening vocal is 'as new' also.  From then on the audio is so deep and rich and dare I say not one tick let alone anything worse.  The first 'rockier' chorus is faultless and as always his guitar work is just incredible, even better with such a clean vinyl!  A very Ladyland-esque type track and it plays with sensational clarity and depth throughout.  Mint

The percussive intro on 'Little Miss Lover' is faultless as is the rest of the track.  There is no distortion on the top end and again I can only grade as Mint

The absolute classic 'Bold As Love' ends this classic album with high end audio.  The opening verse and chorus play with sublime quality and the sonic quality does not drop as you progress further.  The vocals are so strong and clear and that applies to the music also.  One of the finest solos ever written plays with exceptional quality and there is zero distortion on the top end.  The playback is unbelievably strong and the depth of the audio - wow!  The phasing has never played better and the end sequence in particular is just astonishing.  To think this is a mono record being played through a stereo deck and the sonic quality is not affected in any way, not in my opinion.  Even the long fade out is so clean and precise.  What a STUNNING version!  This has to be graded as Mint and I am confident the winning bidder will agree with me!

In summary this first mono pressing plays with amazing audio across both sides with no sign of any interference.  That is so rare and remember this album is nearly 56 years old!  This is clearly a FINAL UPGRADE archive classic in that it just could not play better - no ticks, clicks, pops, jumps or static just pure unadulterated Mint audio from start to finish with a clarity, depth and power that is out of this world!!  Yes the vinyl is visually stunning but as stated I am very confident it has only been lightly played based on the audio, the stunning visual quality, the minimal spindle wear and that there is still some vinyl flecking on the S2 label!  A very impressive cover also including a super clean lyric insert!

The Gatefold, Lyric Insert & Inner Sleeve

This laminated E.J. Day cover is in great condition with only minimal shelf wear, very minimal!  It has been very well preserved and has clearly not been handled very much.  In fact the only obvious 'wear' are three small rubs on the right edge of the front cover and a couple of even smaller rubs on the edge behind it.  The other edges are extremely clean and the top opening edge has very little handling wear.  The wide spine is superb with only the lightest of wear on the corners and the other corners are very clean also.  Just one small rub next to the top right corner.  The front cover is stunning with only a couple of tiny specks at the top and the back cover is just as impressive if not better!  The inside of the gatefold is close to perfect with just minimal wear top right.  The flipbacks are still firmly attached to the cover and have no marking / staining on the edges.  A fine example overall and better than the vast majority you see today.

The original orange lyric insert is in superb condition without any marking / writing and has only very minor creasing.

The original poly-lined inner is in excellent condition with no side splits or tears and has only a little age related fading around the edges, a small mark on one bottom edge and minimal creasing.

Play tested on my Rega P2 Turntable / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers
