Brief Info: Formed in 1966, The Litter were an American psychedelic and garage rock band from Minneapolis. This was their third and final album of the era – they reformed towards the back-end of the 1990s – it was the only album issued here in the UK. Like many ‘one-offs’ issued here by smaller American bands, this made little impact for sales and probably few even noticed. It is a superb album of high-octane proto-punk style rock and psychedelia. Fans of similar bands like MC5 are sure to enjoy this one as well. This 1G/1G UK pressing plays very well indeed even with the record having a few marks. None major, mostly surface and superficial, so very few unwanted sounds on the album at all and sound quality high. Not one I have seen or had many times, indeed my first copy for ages. This set retains high-energy content throughout and for those unfamiliar, it is strongly recommended for checking out.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate. This covers all the closed edges and ends on the back via three large flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains a very fine shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting. A little gentle dulling around the rim shape seen under angled light but little else. A small tip rub on the bottom left corner and any of the few creases being fine and light. Viewed full-on, barely any even show. So a very fine front for this 45-year-old cover.

Cover Back: The main back panel has little to fault at all being clean, crease-free with no rubbing or ringwear. The three flipbacks are all solid and quite neat, the ends a little darkened and a little chipping mainly on the end of the bottom one. A few fine laminate creases on these as well, but no real damage as such.

Top Edge: Straight with mostly very smooth laminate, barely any hint of wear at all.

Bottom Edge: Same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with little wear. The front has a little thickening as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with just the odd small compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this also being perfectly centred on a fairly narrow depth.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is quite small, most on the bottom left as mentioned already. Fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this elusive UK-made late 1960s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white solid unlined inner that has hardly aged at all. Clean with no creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD(++): a fine visual copy that is clean with very fine shine and solidly pressed, arguably harshly graded really. This does have some, mainly fine marks with most-all having no affect on sound. A tiny few light ticks were heard but the music largely obscuring them – these very brief indeed. Little to fault that apart, this vintage album plays very impressively overall (or I would not offer it). Barely any penetrating scratches, the marks mostly being super-fine hairlines seen under bright angled light, with just the odd exception. Visually a fine record that should please many collectors but not for the visual purist.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This is a great album of high energy and quality entertainment. It plays even above it’s highly respectable visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. A tiny few ticks were noted, but as stated above, brief, very few and light, few available copies will outperform this prized 1G/1G pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album. It could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
