The Mello-Kings' name appeared variously on record labels as the Mello-Kings, the Mello Kings, and the Mellokings. Their lone national hit, "Tonight, Tonight," charted twice in the bottom of the Billboard Top 100 in 1957 and 1961. The song has since gone on to become an unusually well-remembered oldie given its low chart positions, appearing on far more compilations than many major hits of the era. Tonight, Tonight rounds up most of the single sides and album tracks the Mello-Kings recorded for Herald Records in the '50s and early '60s, with brief liner notes and no session information or recording dates. The group alternates between attractive doo wop ballads and uptempo songs in a variety of modes, from the Latin rhythms of "Thrill Me" to the unique stop-and-start arrangement and prominent electric bass of "Chip Chip." The Mello-Kings' vocal performances are consistently fine,

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The record comes in a hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(e)           Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(g)            Important disclosure: VISUALLY, THE RECORD IS BEAUTIFUL. HOWEVER, WE CAUTION THAT a low-grade, heavily carbonated vinyl (typical of the budget labels of the 1950’s and 1960’s) used for this pressing has A FEW (NOTHING SERIOUS!) 'bubbles' on the surface. This does not have any significant effect on playing (the record does NOT skip or 'stick' during the playback) but might cause a light click or pop here and there)

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the lower seam

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners. (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)
