It makes perfect sense that the first LP release from garage punk revivalists/satirists the Mummies (and LP is the proper term as the band never released anything in CD format) is a collection of previous singles. For the Mummies specialize in, among other things, repackaging pre-packaged material from rock's past and pointing out the absurdity of the Play the Hits collections from singles rock's past. Play Their Own Records is a perfect primer for the mania that was the Mummies, collecting as it does, all of the material from the Mummies' early singles (released on a handful of indie labels).

These four San Francisco punks had the sense of humour and the audacity to perform out-of-control versions of ‘60s frat punk classics (along with their own wild, wooly, and socially retarded originals such as "Die," "[Doin' The] Kirk" and a handful of others here) wrapped up in stinking, dirty bandages. But the Mummies were also the next logical progression in the '60s punk lineage, following in the footprints of such Northwest rockers as the Wailers and the Sonics (the band to whom the Mummies owe the greatest debt of influence).

But the songs here are also a piss-take on the retro-revivalists who put more fashion than passion into their rock & roll. Lo-fi and proud, the Mummies' takes on such Wailers hits as "Tall Cool One," "Out of Our Tree," and "Mashi" highlight and update the manic originals for a post-punk audience. Not that they were consciously thinking of that. The Mummies flaunted the concept of "budget rock" and flew the middle finger both musically and as a pose.

Play Their Own Records is potent, feral punk rock and it doesn't come any more raw, propulsive, or infectious than the sounds the Mummies collected here.

By the turn of 1990, The Mummies were fed up with the records of their time. Not content to take things lying down, these cut-rate visionaries put out a bunch of their own. And so pleased were they with these 45s, that they spent many an hour in rapt amusement, gathered 'round the great big Gramaphone in the lobby of the old Pre-B.S. headquarters listening to them over and over again. When after ruining several sets of their priceless collector's item 45s, they discovered you were supposed to change the steel needle after every single play of a record, they hit upon the idea of recording a mix tape so they could listen to their back catalog on the in-dash 8-track player of their '63 Bonneville ambulance whilst driving around the Bay Area hitting thrift stores and taquerias (remember, gas was a buck a gallon back then). Well, so satisfied were the Kings of Budget Rock™ with themselves, they successfully convinced the A&R men over at Estrus records in 1992 to release it as the standard long play album, "The Mummies: Play Their Own Records".

Relive those lazy hazy crazy days of the twilight years of the last century, or experience them for the very first time through the technological deviltry of reproducing sound by physically (yes, physically!) dragging a needle down a rut cut into a piece of plastic! Amazing! Marvel at the spiritual bond you will share with The Mummies themselves, as you listen to the strains of their first 4 singles (including 5 tracks you won't find on CD) together! Yes, you too can play The Mummies own records... with them!

We offer combined shipping on all LPs / 12" Vinyls: our shipping rates are listed above. HOWEVER shipping packages that weigh more than 2kg is VERY expensive. Therefore we can only offer combined shipping up to a maximum of SIX (6) LPs / 12" vinyls. Any extra purchases will be invoiced, packaged and shipped separately.

COMBINED POSTAGE FOR DIFFERENT FORMATS will be invoiced at my discretion:

While I am happy to combine (for example) one or two 7” singles into one package with 12” records, sometimes it simply isn’t practical (like if you want me to combine one 12” record with three or more 7” records). I simply do not think that these combinations can be packaged together safely and securely. Therefore these will be invoiced separately as two packages.

PAYMENT

I would appreciate payment within seven days of the auction’s end. If you want to bid on more of my auctions ending a week later please inform me. I will wait and issue a combined invoice at the close of the second week’s auctions.

However, I am no longer willing to carry combined transactions beyond two weeks and in these cases would appreciate payment promptly after the close of the second week’s auctions.

I am sorry to have to introduce these measures – I always try to be patient and allow buyers to bid on extra auctions and / or delay payment. Unfortunately some buyers have been stretching out transactions to unacceptable lengths so I feel I have no option but to limit ‘carried over’ transactions to two weeks.
