Stated on the back of the cover is the following ststement:"The material on this LP comes from private recordings. There is absolutely no usage of recorded material from commercial record companies on this record."
Director Alastair Reid's classic 1971 psychological thriller, The Night Digger ... with brilliant cinematography by Alex Thomson ... has become a cult classic. The cast, all of whom gave strong, stellar performances, included Patricia Neal, Pamela Brown, Nicholas Clay, Jean Anderson, Yootha Joyce and Graham Crowden, this story of a lonely spinster caring for her mother in a crumbling mansion whose lives are demonically invaded by a psychopathic serial killer on a big, black motorcycle is not a movie to watch alone .... in the dark .... or maybe it is. Seldom aired or seen in theatres, this is a movie to search out and watch. The movie was based Joy Cowley's novel, Nest in a Falling Tree. The screenplay was written by Roald Dahl.
Bernard Herrman, who did the music for the Alfred Hitchcock movie, Psycho! , was the perfect choice to score The Night Digger. The music he composed for this film is some of the most impressive he has done; if anything, this music is creepier than the score for Psycho! . Hans Rossback conducted the score, and when listening to it, I had to admit that the music alone could creep you out, with out sinister and murderous bikers. This is great stuff!
On the rear are two earlier works by Hermann: The Currier and Ives Suite and For the Fallen - A Suite. The recordings on side two were done years before this record was issued and were not conducted by Rossback. The orchestra's are uncredited ...perhaps it was Herrmann himself conducting ... just a guess. The Currier and Ives Suite is a complete change from the music for The Night Digger ...exuberant and rambunctious, with a Charles Ives/ Aaron Copland folksy flavor. For the Fallen is a somber piece written as memorial for the war dead. flavour
This is certainly an album for the discerning collector, and should appeal to those with an eclectic taste.
This is just one of what will be a continued offering of rare, interesting and listenable music of many different types. I had an open shop for many years wherein second hand record albums shared space with used books. Even after the shop closed, I continued to acquire old vinyl.
It is a diverse, maybe even eclectic, collection, genre-wise. There will not be any order in which albums appear here ... it will be the pick of the moment. We plan to present some very tasty treats!
Happy bidding! ..... and Happy listening!
