ARTIAL REMARKS FROM THE MARV GOLDBERG WEB SITE (THE BEST!!!)

On June 11, 1952, Sonny Til was paired with 16-year-old Edna McGriff, another Jubilee artist, to record a half dozen duets: "I Only Have Eyes For You," "Once In A While," "Good," "Piccadilly," "That's How I Feel Without You," and "Lovebirds." Back in April, Edna had had a smash R&B hit with the Korean War lament, "Heavenly Father." However well-intentioned the pairing might have been, their voices didn't blend all that well, and none of their duets ever charted. Jubilee released "I Only Have Eyes For You"/"Once In A While" in July; both sides received excellent ratings the week of July 19, but the fans weren't buying.

On July 11, the Orioles kicked off a week at Weeke's Cafe, in Atlantic City, with Charles Brown and his Orchestra. Right after that, it was into the Howard Theater (D.C.) for a week with the Paul Williams Orchestra and the Oscar Peterson Trio. Then it was back to New York for their next session on July 28, at which they recorded "Don't Cry Baby," "See See Rider," and "Till Then."

August 16 saw the Orioles taking a leisurely Saturday night riverboat cruise up the Chesapeake River, as they entertained along with saxman Lynn Hope. Another session was held on August 25, but none of the three songs recorded that day ("Feeling Low," "Good Looking Baby," and "Along About Sundown") was ever released. However, in August, Jubilee issued "Don't Cry Baby," backed with the old blues, "See See Rider." (For those of you who only know the later 50s and 60s versions of this song, it isn't spelled "C. C. Rider" at all. A "rider" was a sex partner, and the singer is saying "see what you've done.") Billboard reviewed the disc on September 6:

("See"): The Orioles and the Buddy Lucas Ork combine to hand the ditty a solid reading featuring a pushing beat.

("Don't"): The plaintive ballad is chanted with persuasion by the group. Good weeper blues wax.

The Orioles played New Haven's Storyville Club the week beginning September 19, 1952. After that, they appeared for a week at Philadelphia's Earle Theater, starting on October 3. The morning of the last day at the Earle (October 9), the guys went to the Reco Art Studio (in Philadelphia) to record a single tune, a cover of Jo Stafford's "You Belong To Me." This was the only time, in their stay with Jubilee, that the Orioles didn't record in New York. It was probably due to them having been held over for another week at the Earle (this time with Erskine Hawkins), and Jubilee wanting to be able to compete with Jo Stafford.

"You Belong To Me" was issued in November (proudly proclaimed it as a "Special Release!"), backed with "I Don't Want To Take A Chance" and reviewed in the November 22 edition of Billboard:

("Belong"): The group works over the pop hit in schmaltzy style. Not their best effort, though their fans will probably take to it.

("Chance"): Resonant vocalizing and a flexible beat mark this reading of the ballad. An okay effort).

October 1952 also saw the issue of another pair of Sonny Til/Edna McGriff duets: "Piccadilly"/ "Good." They both got good reviews the week of November 1. On November 11 and 12, the Orioles appeared, with Fats Domino, at some dances hosted by Emmy Lou Dukes, a DJ on WMCK, Pittsburgh. Early December found the Orioles at the Club Riviera in St. Louis, along with Ruth Brown, the Spence Twins, and the Georgie Hudson Orchestra. 

On December 21, 1952, the Orioles recorded "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" and "Teardrops On My Pillow." Then, during Christmas week, the Orioles, Edna McGriff, and Jubilee's Buddy Lucas Orchestra did a series of one-nighters in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania

Answer: As far as I know yes...can not find any bootleg (or somebody selling it) 45 in the web (EBAY, GEMM, WEB SITES, ETC) or books...Joe Pecoraro's book on bootlegs & reissues mentions nine  jUBILEE 45rpms that once were boots....not this one....Kreiter list it at $750.00 and he placed a "B" along any record he knew was available as a boot, this one do not have the "B"...Goldmine listed it at $500.00....If you have anything on this let me know...THE RECORD WAS SUPERFICIALLY CLEANED ONLY

Were they the best vocal group ever? If not, the Orioles ware certainly amongst the very best. It was the sound - Sonny Til crooning and wooing the crowds, the stage presence of Til and the group, and the constant churning of one high quality record after another. The advertising and promotion from Jubilee combined with the mostly high marks given to the songs by the trade papers didn't hurt either. They were a super group that for several years, would rival any group you could name. The group endured several personnel changes as most outfits did, back in the day.

Unfortunately, all of the original Orioles have passed on. Sonny died in December of 1981. The last member, Johnny Reed, lived long enough to accept the award as the Orioles were inducted into the hall of fame in 1995, and enjoy it for just over 10 years until he passed in 2005. Deborah Chessler actually handed him that award!

Record Grading: Standard guidelines for grading records comes down to a subjective judgment that may vary from person to person. We grade records and LP covers visually AND (when possible) play-tested. We make every effort to give full disclosure (remember that the LP has at least 12 tracks and the grading may vary between each other)  and your satisfaction is guaranteed. Don't assume that our vinyl determination of "Very Good+" is the same as yours!

RECORD OR COVER GRADED VG or LESS WILL BE "SOLD AS IS"

MINT: Unplayed, still sealed.
 

NM RECORDS: are shiny, with no visible defects, they might have one or 2 minor superficial scuff and they should play without any noise. Writing, stickers or other markings cannot appear on the label, nor can any “spindle marks” from someone trying to blindly put the record on the turntable. Major factory defects also must not be present; a record and label obviously pressed off center is not Near Mint. If played, it will do so with no surface noise. (NM records don’t have to be “never played”; a record used on an excellent turntable can remain NM after many plays if the disc is properly cared for.)

NM COVERS: have no creases, ring wear or seam splits of any kind.

picture sleeves should look as if they never housed a record. This is a great reason to remove your 45s from their picture sleeves and keep them separate. Just keeping the 45 inside the sleeve will cause damage than can reduce the grade of the sleeve. 

VG++ (Excellent) RECORDS: Barely noticeable play wear and background noise. May have surface scuffs and/or superficial marks, which will be inaudible or indiscernible from the background, no scratches. Very nice, flaws noted.

VG++ COVERS: Artwork is still as close to perfect as can be. Some impression to the cover (minor outer ring wear) but no ink wear! Some slight creases to the corners, but not wrinkled and obtrusive to the eye. The corners can show white (where the artwork pasted slick was) meaning, slight wear. No seam splits or writing on the cover or taped repairs can make this grade.  

VG+ RECORDS: may show some slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect the listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK. Minor signs of handling are OK, too, such as telltale marks around the center hole, but repeated playing has not misshapen the hole. There may be some very light ring wear or discoloration,

but it should be barely noticeable.

VG+ COVERS: should have only minor wear. A VG+ cover might have some very minor seam wear or a split (less than one inch long) at the bottom, the most vulnerable location. Also, a VG+ cover may have some defacing, such as a cut-out marking. Covers with cut-out markings can never be considered Near Mint.

VG+ PICTURE SLEEVES: might show some very light creasing where it is obvious that a record once resided (or still does reside). A VG+ picture sleeve might have some very minor seam wear or a split (less than one inch long) at the bottom, the sleeve’s most vulnerable location. 

VG RECORDS:  have more obvious flaws than their counterparts in better shape. They lack most of the original gloss found on factory-fresh records. Groove wear is evident on sight, as are light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail. When played, a VG record has surface noise, and some scratches  may be audible, especially in soft passages and during a song’s intro and ending. But the noise will not overpower the music otherwise. Minor writing, tape, or a sticker can detract from the label. Many collectors who have jukeboxes   will use VG records in them and not think twice. They remain a fine listening experience, just not the same as if it were in better shape.

VG COVERS and PICTURE SLEEVES: will have many signs of human handling. Ring wear  in the middle or along the edges of the cover where the edge of a record would  reside, is obvious, though not overwhelming. Some more creases might be  visible. Seam splitting will be more obvious; it may appear on all three sides,  though it won’t be obvious upon looking. Someone might have written or stamped  a price tag on it, too.
