Brief Info: Classic debut album from the legendary American bluesman and his band – regarded by many as one of the greatest within the genre. This an ultimate first press UK mono copy on the rare Elektra ‘gold’ format label. A label quickly replaced by the orange format, thus finding this album on this prized format is very difficult indeed. Originals included the imported American cover, these very delicate and prone to wear and damage – this one has survived well without a great deal to fault. The same for the vintage mono record as well, a few light surface marks only, but superficial and non-penetrating, this offers very full-on dynamic sound with any hint of age or wear minimal. So a classic for blues collectors, this will seldom be seen or offered as a genuine original.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format made with thick card with the usual paste-on back panel. This being the correct EKL mono version. Printed and made in the U.S.A. with a UK polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A little edge and corner tip rubbing, any creasing very fine on the edges, but little present at all. The lack of rubbing to the typically unforgiving surface is minimal and faint, it will prove hard to find better and has fared better than most imported covers from this era.

Cover Back: A little surface rubbing near the left edge, traces elsewhere, mild creasing near the top left corner. Not a great deal else to fault with any ageing or grubbiness to this black and white surface being very little and faint.

Top Edge: Straight and solid, devoid of splits which his unusual on these brittle card U.S. covers. A little patchy rubbing or chipping that will rarely be avoided at best.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same, this storage edge will rarely be seen less worn I feel sure.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp (for a thick card cover) with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, one minor dink has clipped a couple of letters of the manufacturer. All text for the title and catalogue number being almost perfect and barely worn.

Corners: Moderate tip rubs on the right pair, little on the spine at all, but a little mild creasing near a couple. Very fine shape, arguably better is retained with no knocks or major dinks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile imported American cover that were initially used with the UK issues of this record. One that could prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive and little-aged item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a white polylined inner that is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. With a clear lining as seen through two crisp undamaged window circles, there is gentle creasing only and all edges are unsplit with just one tiny neat repair on the bottom edge made by myself to stop it potentially widening in future.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): and this hardly does this splendid 50-year-old mono record full justice. Only quite few, mostly fine and light surface marks that are superficial, no penetrating stylus marks, this is a vintage classic that has survived the era and mode well. A very fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed on thick robust vinyl. A copy with only modest plays on all the evidence, given all the factors, this has survived well and still offers impressive sound. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: My first ever copy of this one, and it proved an exciting listen. This magnificent early electric blues album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, powerful and dynamic mono sound with little hint of any wear or sound degrading, it has a perfect rawness and intensity that works perfectly for these early blues songs. Possibly traces, but I remind, I play all my records on an immensely critical Linn LP12 turntable that such records were never really designed for. Given the age and mode, it will take a remarkable original example to better this and little, if indeed anything really spoilt the pleasure of the play-grade. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. This is British early electric blues at its very best, and this classic even pre-dates John Mayall’s famous Bluesbreakers album from 1966. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
