Before I let the AI do the talking I’m gonna take a crack at defining this band and this particular album.
The Replacements out of Mineapolis Minnesota started out as a garage rock band that entered the early to mid eighties American hardcore scene. There first few albums “Stink” & “Sorry Ma Forgot To Take Out The Trash” were hard edged fast face post punk rockers. Westerberg couldn’t help himself throwing in a well crafted pop rock song into the mix of electrifying up tempo punk anthems. The following few albums showed the depth of The Replacements veering off there hard edged roots to more melodic and undeniably catchy rock songs. Hootenanny , Let It Be and Tim all broke every rule in the book for a band in the hardcore genre. There energy was second to none and kept there core audience while expanding there fan base with one critically acclaimed album after another. Then a setback the lead guitarist who was a hard charger in the party department was released from the band due to his drug use and his inability to perform up to standard. He subsequently died 8 years later of organ failure. His replacement no pun intended “Slim Dunlap” filled the void and then some. Enter the release of 1987 Please to Meet Me, this is the album that bridged the gap from fringe band to a highly polished rock band without compromising any of there core values. This album speaks for itself. It was the height of The Replacements as a band. This would be the last and best album that was raw unfiltered powerful Mats . One track after another from pounding rock anthems IOU, Red Red Wine to well crafted pop rock songs like Alex Chilton . This is in my opinion the very best the Replacements have to offer, if I were ever to introduce anyone to The Replacements I would start them right here. There body of work as a whole and there strength as a live band I consider them one of the greatest American Rock bands of all time. They do not get the recognition they deserve but for those that know this band. It’s a fact, very few bands bring to the table what the Replacements can.
