It was released in the United States on 20 June 1966 by London Records as their sixth American album. The album proved to be a major artistic breakthrough for The Rolling Stones, being the first full-length release by the band to consist exclusively of Mick Jagger / Keith Richards compositions. Aftermath was also the first Rolling Stones album to be recorded entirely in the United States, at the legendary RCA Studios in Hollywood, California at 6363 Sunset Boulevard, and the first album the band released in stereo.
The 1st ever pressings came with what has come to be known as the SHADOW cover, as the word AFTERMATH came with a shadowy underlay design. This was almost immediately withdrawn and only a handful were printed. This has become one of he rarest album covers of the 1960's and is near impossible to find in any condition.
The album is also notable for its musical experimentation, with Brian Jones playing a variety of instruments not usually associated with rock music—including sitar on "Paint It, Black", the Appalachian dulcimer on "Lady Jane" and "I Am Waiting", the marimbas (African xylophone) on "Under My Thumb" and "Out of Time," harmonica on "High and Dry" and "Goin' Home", as well as guitar and keyboards. The song writing featured some of the Stones' most overtly misogynistic lyrics and, though full of experiments as noted above, much of the music was still rooted in Chicago electric blues.
As with all the Stones pre-1967 LPs, different editions were released in the UK and the USA. This was a common feature of British pop albums at that time—the same practice was applied to all The Beatles albums prior to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band—because UK albums typically did not include tracks that had already been released as singles, and because British pop albums generally included 13 or 14 tracks, while American albums usually featured 11 or 12 tracks.
The original British version of Aftermath was issued in April 1966 as a fourteen-track LP. Issued between the non-LP single releases of "19th Nervous Breakdown" and "Paint It, Black", Aftermath was a major hit in the UK, spending eight weeks at #1 on the UK album chart.
ALBUM PLAYED FOR AUDIO GRADING:
Yes – great sound quality throughout!
This great record plays up to the visual grading and beyond. Strong, undistorted sound free of loud pops or clicks. This is a great pressing of this original Stones giant, with that early rich sound normally found on great first pressings!
There is some occasional very light background static, the occasional light static tic, but any surface sound is light and infrequent. Super strong audio, the album plays right through with no repeating unwanted noises.
This rare record plays with clear strong sound, with vibrant audio throughout. Strong, undistorted sound, the frequencies are sharp and clear and free of loud pops or clicks and little sound between the tracks. The start of the record on both sides is extremely clear, with very slight background static only. The channels are clean and unstressed with no evidence of any groove-wear whatsoever. I will give a detailed account below:
Side 1. starts of with with barely any light static in the run in, and then 'Mother's Little Helper' comes in and the audio is clear and bright, with very little static and no loud pops or clicks. 'Stupid Girl' maintains the same high standard, with barely any light occasional background static, it plays with super clear sound and no loud pops.
'Lady Jane', starts off with some light static and the music is clear and bright. There are no loud pops or clicks and no distortion what so ever, just one or two random tics.
This is the track on AfterMath that so often suffers from a lot of surface noise and over playing. Here it sounds great with just some very light static.
'Under My Thumb' plays with bright, clear audio. There is also some very light background static and a single very light click near the start of the track.
'Doncha Bother Me' plays with great audio, as does 'Goin Home', no loud clicks, just some light occasional static and a couple of light tics near the start of 'Goin Home'. This track plays with no distortion, and I can confirm that there is no distortion anywhere on the vinyl. Very clear audio, it really sounds great.
This original pressing plays with bright clear audio, with barely any static or surface sound. The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, and vocals which come through with tremendous power. As with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear.
Graded at EXCELLENT PLUS.
THE RECORD - VISUAL GRADING

SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING:
All our records are play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description. We aim to give a precise and concise description of the sound, pointing out the slightest defect so that you know exactly what you are buying. We aim to describe all records as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.
VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:
Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.
