Label Conditions: Both is beautiful condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Such popular mono records are seldom seen this clean.

Rarity: Moderate, but like Beatles albums, condition is always the primary factor. Mono originals usually surface in very poor, heavily played or scratched conditions with sound quality to match. Finding ones clearly less used, and certainly not abused or wrecked by worn-out, blunted or chipped heavy-tracking mono stylus, are far harder to find. This one plays beautifully with little unwanted. Also the cover is fantastic, again with little unwanted, even the vintage inner sleeve is clean and impressive as seen. Such copies are elusive and even scarce.

Brief Info: One of the classic 1960s compilations, this the first by The Rolling Stones from 1966 that included all the hit singles, most of which were not included on the UK albums. This was also issued in the United States, but with fewer songs and a somewhat different track selection. An original in glorious mono, the choice mode of the era, and for me, no better way to experience these early gems without the usual crackle and pops of the often heavily played singles. Evidence suggests this one has been played little and has a superb fresh, shiny cover, the inside booklet close to pristine. This one has no peep-hole mono/stereo indicator on the back that were introduced in 1969, so an early example. Not seen or heard a better example of this classic for some considerable time.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a gatefold format with Clarifoil laminate front and back. The inside pages are unprotected, but have a delicate sheen finish apart from the inside back that is matt. The 6-page book inside is stapled into the fold, but does not the actual outer spine. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace, includes the vintage polylined inner sleeve. This has the correct mono catalogue number prefix as seen on the spine.

Lamination – Front & Back: A cover of immense beauty, and somewhat ahead-of-its-time in terms of design with a stapled inside booklet – later ones included it as a loose insert. This one owned for many years by the same person. Both front and back look superb, the laminate with beautiful shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and barely any traces of dulling, even viewed under light. Any creasing, very few and mostly fine and light – the single thickness front will rarely be seen with fewer than this. The famous fisheye band graphic on the front looks absolutely stunning with intense unaged colour and gleam – the same goes for the back. With scrutiny under light, a very faint sticker outline trace is seen (just) near the top left corner of the back, but is practically invisible with normal viewing, the same applies for marks or blemishes. The owner was something of a perfectionist for looks, and the only noteworthy blemish as such is minor evidence of lower edge and corner tip enhancement, the evidence being a little patchy black on the machine cut of the lower front card seen viewed end-on. This is minimal indeed, but I will mention any blemish I spot while inspecting a cover for my listings. Be assured, this beautiful cover has massively more positives than any minor negatives and it will take an amazing example to better this.

Cover Inner Gatefold & Booklet: The six book pages are printed on high-quality smooth paper that have an impressive sheen, there is hardly anything of note to fault on these pages. Both staples are solid and unloosened with no tarnishing of the steel staples. Gatefold book covers have to be touched to view, so the odd gentle traces of handling, this mostly on the inside back that has a more revealing matt surface, again, this is only light and faint compared to many seen. Let’s be honest, owners of this album would not have worn gloves to enjoy the brilliant artwork of the young band. In terms of real wear, barely any, all surfaces are very impressive as seen.

Top Edges: Fragile and thin edges, these have minimal hint of any wear or thickening, a tiny trace of a corner enhancement being somewhat critical. Impressively neat and flush in manufacture as well.

Bottom Edges: Slight patchy rubbing to the main black fold, the front edge with little wear again. As stated above, small black traces on the white machine cut card area here-and-there which my front picture shows (look hard).

Right Edge(s), and Type: Superb again: clean, mostly sharp to very sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on, a tiny black tip-in trace on the bottom front corner tip. Record enters on the back.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Any tilt minimal also, all text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate that remains super-smooth and clear with no toning or scuffs. Note also the correct mono catalogue number.

Corners: All corners retain excellent shape with no bashes or dinks. The visually very fussy previous owner gently enhanced the tips, but with only scant evidence as such as stated already.

Cover Summary: Even with the tinest ‘imperfections’ for the absolute purist, this beautiful and age-defying cover should please many, if not most collectors. Always delicate, this pre-peep-hole dedicated mono cover looks fantastic with a freshness seldom seen these days. Not pristine, but setting a standard to be beaten.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably better. This vintage Decca polylined inner is superb and like the main cover, aged little as seen. Hardly creased with two pristine window circles, the lining fresh and ultra clear with no fogging at all. The paper still very white, the lack of toning unusual to see, even on the seam adhesive areas. All edges unsplit with no repairs. This UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces wispy, very fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. No penetrating stylus scratches, any blemishes hardly register in average natural room light. Such fine traces usually the result of dry-cloth ‘cleaning’, the more caring owner did at the time as was recommended. Most will know the states these vintage popular mono records are found in these days, this one is very impressive indeed and with sound to match. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb mono collection of classic early singles plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early mono pressing significantly I feel sure. For me, the single channel mode blows away the processed stereo version, these old singles were issued on 45 rpm singles in mono, and that is how they were made to be heard. Even played on a revealing stereo Linn LP12 Sondek, for which it was not really designed, this record sounds fantastic with all the warmth and detail this mode offers when found somewhere near its best. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – the odd gentle sporadic tick is near impossible to avoid totally, that is simply being realistic – but there is little else on a record that has been carefully stored and handled. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
