Label/Format: Decca – genuine original first press format with the deep ring ridge that actually feels quite sharp against the fingertip. This detail was later removed or changed on later pressings. These have the matt surfaces with gentle texturing.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive. Any spindle marks are very fine and faint.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 142 grams. This a typically solid, high-quality Decca pressing.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, most all Rolling Stones albums sold well but condition is always a major factor. Finding the earlier issues that appear lesser played is more difficult – these early beat classics were amongst the most heaviest played and typical ‘party-pieces’. Many loaned out and played to near destruction on massively heavyweight tracking Dansettes, often with blunt or chipped stylus. Early Stones albums were recorded loudly with a more raw sound, the grooves and that precious mono sound more intolerant of abuse, few will heard in anything like original condition. Well this beauty has little to fault, appearing lightly played, and with due care and certainly not trashed by basic, even crude record players of the time. There lies the difference, this copy plays very impressively with little unwanted, also being played on a revealing stereo turntable for which it was not really designed. Both playing surfaces largely ignore their vintage and there is no disputing the age of this one with such early matrixes (details further down), and the definitive deep outer ring ridge. Not only that, this copy has one of the least worn, early very thin card covers I have seen for some time, it includes the infamous ‘Blind Man’ text on the back. Later cover-up with paste-on backs then removed altogether on future printings. Even the vintage polylined Decca inner is nice. A quality copy to please many collectors.

Brief Info: Classic second album, largely following on in the same vein as the debut with mostly R&B covers and again proving popular, and one of the biggest sellers of the year. Three Jagger/Richards are songs are included. The original UK cover causing controversy with text many deemed offensive – it was covered up with hastily stuck on panels, then omitted entirely. This a lovely all-round example that proved a joy to play grade.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A single format with a Clarifoil laminated front that wraps around the closed edges and ends via the spine, the back is matt and smooth. This has the ‘Blind Man’ text as seen. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker on the typically thin card that was very vulnerable and highly prone to creasing and more serious laminate issues. The original polylined inner sleeve is included as well.

Lamination & Front: A very thin card sleeve that seldom escapes major laminate issues or bowing. This one retains very fine shine, freshness and clarity, also lacking the usual lifting that few seem to escape. Quite unusually, it remains reasonably flat with minimal bowing of the card. Some edge creasing which is mostly fine and light. A vertical one near the very spine edge the most visible, however, even here, it has hardly resulted in lifting – any traces very small and light – so often large unsightly blisters are seen on this cover which blights many. This is attractive as seen and will not prove easy to find much better.

Cover Back: Even with very gentle traces of discolouration/ultra faint toning hint, this is one of the best No 2 backs I have seen for some time. These regularly brown and age badly which this one has largely avoided. Minimal creasing or wear, this is perfect match for the impressive front. The controversial text is included which reads:

“Cast deep in your pockets for loot to buy this disc of grooves and fancy words. If you don’t have bread, see that blind man knock him on the head, steal his wallet and low and behold you have the loot, if you put in the boot, good, another one sold!)”

Really quite amazing how this was allowed to be sold including this text, even by today’s standards, this is in pretty poor taste. When enough outcry emerged, the back was covered over with a new paste-on sheet with the offending text removed, then it was reprinted without it at all.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both are smooth and retaining full laminate with no scuffs. Very thin and reasonably straight with barely any wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, generally sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring light and little as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Very gentle bowing being critical of a cover like this. Still solid with only a little gentle compression in places, the ends are pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate, also well centred on quite a narrow depth.

Corners: Minimal tip rubbing or creasing, all are very impressive with excellent shape retained with no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: A very impressive original cover with scant evidence of age, finding a ‘Blind Man’ text original significantly better could prove difficult. One to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only marked down for quite mild paper darkening. This is guaranteed the original as well – it has NO reference to ‘stereo’ at all with all text details regarding mono usage. It has two neat window circles, clear polylining, any creasing/crinkle light and no edge splits or repairs. Includes a British patent and ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and this I feel for a very popular 50+-year-old record, is being ultra cautious and conservative. With so many seen in very poor, shocking and trashed states these days, this is on the side of the vinyl spectrum. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. There are no penetrating stylus scratches and sound quality is very impressive. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This popular early Rolling Stones album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, the odd gentle trace or polite reminder you are playing the real thing, being very critical, but this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on stereo equipment. I am certain this record has been played only lightly, and with due care, generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. These vintage Decca records, made in the era of quality, were robust and tough – and they had to be being honest. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
