Label/Format: Decca – unboxed format. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both look fantastic for a very popular mono record. Fresh, clean and looking lightly handled or likely played. Any spindle marks are fine, very few and faint. Simply compare to what most of these early monos look like and were subjected to. Without any doubt, this has been only very lightly played and survived those heady beat days of loaning, parties and Dansettes.

Rarity: Scarce: Like Beatles records, Rolling Stones early albums sold in vast numbers, especially in mono but were usually heavily played, often into submission and are barely worth looking at, let alone listening to. As I always state, conditions are paramount on these early classics. Unboxed mono copies are invariably the most susceptible and prone to wear and invisible damage simply by what they played on at the time. All evidence, including superb clean sound, suggests this one has received few plays. The record has only a few fine and light surface marks with no sound and no heavy arm drops or jolts have inflicted any penetrating scratches on this one. Such copies are far rarer.

Brief Info: The Rolling Stones third album that most interested collectors will already know well enough. The main factor worthy of note is the American and the UK issues varied considerably with different artwork and song titles. Clearly, this is a UK repressing and in very fine all-round condition with only very modest hints of it’s age.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This wraps around the closed edges but the only end is via the spine. The top and bottom ones are tucked inside. This is a dedicated Mono cover and has a more grey finish to the front with the merest hint of faint green hue. Made with thin card, hence very wear and damage prone. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker.

Lamination & Front: This vintage cover has generally aged well. It is not dead flat as laminate over time contracts which can either cause mild bowing or lifting from the surface (or both). The good news is this is fully adhered with no blistering at all which makes quite a difference to these early Stones covers. There is a horizontal thumb type crease towards the right edge but few others – minus that, and a full excellent grading would have applied. It is relatively fine anyway. Retaining a lovely shine, clarity and even freshness, this has minimal hints of any friction rubs or dulling. And even under light, any evidence of rim impression is very slight indeed. This front is very impressive indeed.

Cover Back: These black and white unprotected backs rarely escape grubbiness and rubbing. Any here is only light and this has aged far better than many around. Often these appear dirty and very tired looking, this is not the case on this one. Just the odd small light rub trace around the edges along with minor grubbiness. The main black area is impressive and clean with any handling traces light. The lack of creasing and especially ringwear is very positive news – any traces very light indeed.

Top Edge: Barely any noteworthy wear but as stated not quite straight.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly sharp with any thickening or burr tiny, light and little. The thinness of the card is very apparent when viewed end-on and this vulnerable edge has survived in super condition.

Spine and Text: A fine spine too: with so many of these quite thin types mashed and buckled, this is in excellent condition but again, is mildly bowed as so many of these vintage Decca covers will be. Solid with minimal compression and all text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled, clear laminate and even this retains a strong shine.

Corners: All have a little tip rubbing with odd tiny tip crease, all retain very fine or better shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this fragile thin card cover. Not without a few blemishes or minor wear, but at this great age and popularity, I think it’s earned the right too. With so many seen literally falling apart, almost held together with grime and tape, this is simply a lovely example that has just slightly and naturally aged. Just about enough to remind of it’s impressive vintage and I know that is the way many collectors want them. This will please many collectors but not the perfectionists of course.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the heavy duty polylined Decca inner is also in very fine condition, this is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’. There is some crinkle to the lower corners but the edges are secure and the window circles pristine with a very clear lining. Any other creasing minimal.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: both sides have fine and faint surface marks, more like minor paper scuffs than stylus marks. The types that cannot be felt at all hence have no audio consequence at all. So few mono records this great age will avoid some minor surface marks as per these as best and I regard this as a very find example. A lovely visual copy for a popular record purchased right in the fashionable beat-era of the middle 60s. It is very clean with fine shine, intense black and quite heavily pressed on the usual high quality Decca vinyl. These popular Stones classics seldom survive with so few plays and less marks. No heavy arm drops or jolts on this one and absolutely no groove wear at all. Only a tiny percentage of available, or even non-available copes will be seen with no marks at all, these records were bought to be played and minor non-sounding blemishes are nigh-on impossible to avoid. Both labels impressive and sound quality to match, this mono gem will please many, if not most realistic collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This third Stones album plays even above it’s pleasing visual grading with practically nothing to fault. In fact, this record plays with stunning ultra clean mono sound and that’s close to perfect. Totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. What an absolute joy to hear these old songs sounding so wonderful, the beautiful twang of the guitars and Jagger’s vocals with genuine convincing power. Few copies will even match, let alone outperform this early unboxed copy that has no irritating crackle or ‘mono’ noises caused by heavyweight or badly misaligned tracking. Both channels are clean and sharp and remain focused and precise, this too on a very clinical turntable that takes no prisoners, revealing all – good and bad – but nothing bad on this one. This is impressive and I did play this at considerable volume. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality Decca record. For clean audio quality, this copy will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. Visually not for the perfectionist, but the sound is truly exceptional and that, for me is the most important factor by far.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
