Label Conditions: Both very clean, still fresh and attractive. Around moderate spindle marks on side one, some quite long, only light and very few on two. The record plays very impressively with little unwanted.

Rarity: Scarce: in stereo. Like Beatles records, Rolling Stones early albums sold in vast numbers, but largely in mono, the mode of the time. Finding copies with nice covers and still offering high quality sound is hard. These were often played to near destruction on more basic record players, these were typical party-pieces with predictable results.

Stamper Codes: None present which is somewhat unusual.

Musicians: Mick Jagger – lead vocals, harmonica, percussion; Brian Jones – electric and acoustic guitar, harmonica, organ, backing vocals; Keith Richards – guitar and backing vocals; Charlie Watts – drums and percussion; Bill Wyman – bass guitar, backing vocals.

Brief Info: The Rolling Stones third album with three songs written by Jagger and Richard. American and UK issues varied considerably with different artwork and song titles. Most fans will know that album well, I regard it one of their best early albums. A copy in very fine condition with a really nice cover, the record has a few light marks, mostly surface and practically all superficial with no effect on the impressive clean audio. For a record over 50-years-old, this more elusive stereo example sets a high standard that many fans will be pleased to own.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This wraps around the folds and ends on the back via the spine, the main back panel is matt with a gentle hint of texturing. This is a dedicated stereo cover and has a more hue front picture. Made with thin card, hence very wear and damage prone. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace, includes a 1966 date-coded inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains a very fine shine, freshness and clarity, it has no lifting with minimal dulling, even viewed under light. Any of the very few creases are fine and light. I have seldom seen one of these vintage Rolling Stones covers with fewer issues, this only gives gentle clues to age and remains very attractive.

Cover Back: Some moderately gentle darkening to the white box edge areas that few will ever escape. The lack of rubbing and creasing is great news, any handling marks to the black surface are also gentle and light. The song credits for side two appear a little ‘filled’, that I am certain is due the printing quality and not unusual on these style of covers.

Top Edge: Unworn, fully laminated and smooth. A little natural bowing on all the folded edges which is somewhat a natural trait of Clarifoil covers, especially if there is no lifting.

Bottom Edge: As above for the actual fold, minor thickening to the card panel end being critical for a storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly sharp with any thickening or burring light and little near front edge centre. The thinness of the card is very apparent when viewed end-on and this vulnerable edge has survived in overall impressive condition, and is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid with minimal compression, the ends are pinched in manufacture, all text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled, clear laminate. A little bowed as stated above, this indeed can be variable depending on room temperature and humidity.

Corners: Minimal tip wear with very fine or better shape retained. No bashes or dinking of note.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this fragile thin card cover. Just enough to politely remind of its considerable age, and personally, I have no qualms with that. One to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the heavy duty polylined Decca inner is also in very fine condition, this is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. Minimal creasing or crinkle, two undamaged crisp window circles and clear lining. All edges unsplit with no repairs, this one is date-coded 016 (January 1966).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): both sides have a few, mostly fine surface marks, but avoiding penetrating stylus scratches. I think this record has been played quite modestly for an early title that rarely is. Overall a lovely visual copy for a popular record purchased right in the fashionable beat-era of the mid-1960s. It is very clean with fine shine, intense black and quite heavily pressed on the usual high quality Decca vinyl. These top-quality pressings were more able to withstand usage and minor mishaps, but this appears to avoided anything of real note. The main factor is it plays very impressively with little unwanted. Age and era is always a considerable for these types, and this has survived the era very well.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This more elusive, even scarce stereo unboxed original plays even above it’s pleasing visual grading with very little to fault. In fact, this record plays with lovely clean sound and the stereo mix is impressive. Distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, this being better produced than the two previous albums. Any surface sounds hardly registered and only a couple or three clicks were noted. What an absolute joy to hear these old songs sounding so fine, the beautiful twang of the guitars and Jagger’s vocals focused and clear. Few very early available copies will better this I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with no tracking issues*, I really enjoyed this one. For clean, largely blemish-free audio quality, this copy could prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. Visually not for the perfectionist, but the sound exudes quality and should please many, if not most fans and collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
