Label/Format: Decca – original unboxed stereo format.

Label Conditions: Both are clean and fresh looking and I am certain this copy has been played very little, reitterated by superb sound. Side two has minimal traces of spindle marks, any present ultra fine and faint. Side one, as can be seen on my picture, has a few that do show. Clearly a more pointed steel spindle from the distant past has left it’s mark, but that apart it has little else to fault.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 143 grams. A very good weight for any record.

Rarity: Scarce and I consider harder to find than the mono version. This is a very solid and complete unboxed stereo copy with a very fine cover, unsplit inner and a record little played that offers very impressive, clean sound. Take none of these facts for granted.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This Stones gem will forever be compared to The Beatles Sgt Pepper - their 1967 psych album, many of the major acts of this time were producing albums in this style. Satanic Majesties has never received the full recognition I believe it really deserves. For sure a massive change of direction from the previous albums and it all may have been too much for many of their fans. Often described as a ‘flawed classic’, but I have heard few flaws myself. A brave and compelling album, a little weird (by their standards) for sure but many moments and songs of true genius - ‘She’s a Rainbow’ and ‘2000 light years from Home’ always sound so much better on this ‘proper’ album rather than compilations. This album is a barrage of sound with brass, psychedelia and effects and for The Stones, a real one-off. For me it’s one of those albums that’s totally essential in both mono and stereo as they sound very different. The mono version is more robust and solid with greater bass depth and solidity. The stereo version has wonderful imagery and presence. Take the brass blasting out of the speakers at the very start of side one - it hits you full in the face, and the album just does not let up - this is a very intense experience. Play this album loud and you will be left spinning. So often seen in a trashed state, or at best just well played (a sign of those times) with worn, often badly focused sound and even distortion and heavy crackle. The sonic delivery and complex production embedded in these grooves always made this one of the most prone-to-wear records ever made in this period. Early heavyweight record players, so often mono, simply wore quickly this most fragile of recordings - the sounds, the high frequencies especially, always fare very badly with clipping running into moderate, even severe distortion. I have heard so few of these that play perfectly throughout, but this superb stereo copy gives of it’s very best with hardly anything to fault at all. With truly astonishing sound and detail and totally lacking that unwanted groovewear and noises, this is a diamond for more discerning Rolling Stones fan. Even the very intense start to side two plays to an exceptional standard and devoid of the focus loss and crackle heard on so many. It’s quite clear to me this record has been played only modestly, and then with care. No arm drops or jolts have occurred on this one with very clean playing surfaces with little more than avery fine, light and faint surface marks seen under angled light. Unusually, this has an intact inner sleeve but with a few corner creases. The cover has little real wear and still attractive. So a very solid and enjoyable early example that will please many collectors.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: very prone to damage and oven severe warping due to the adhesion of the 3D picture on the cover front. Atmospheric conditions e.g. humidy, cold and heat react with the glue and make this cover bow, often very badly so it becomes mishapen and even badly bent. Few of these will ever lay dead-flat these days.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT: or very close to. The very famous 3D cover of course – a gatefold format with a laminated front and back. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace. This is the very first format, original, no peep-hole mono/stereo indicators, they came later in 1969.

Cover Lamination: This has always been a difficult cover and it can and does vary considerably in manufacture. The front laminate has a few fine ‘crinkles’ where it has not been applied quite flush to the surface – these are quite common and often seen on various other covers. Two spring to mind immediately and are almost the norm. These being Led Zeppelin III and Jack Bruce’s ‘Songs for a Tailor’. These are purely natural manufacture blemishes and have little visual impact or even visibility with normal viewing. The back has no issues like this and adhesion is practically total with a little creasing, mostly very fine near the top only seen under light. Very slight and small lifts near the front spine edge again register little. Overall, the laminate remains fresh, clear with very fine shine and has no peeling. Any dulling minimal and very faint indeed. Generally, quite flat with a mild trace of waving on the back and way better than average – these really can bow badly

The 3D Picture: This famous feature is solid, neatly applied and has minimal traces of bowing. I have seen some of these saucer-shaped but this has reacted little to environment or changes over the years. There are some light surface marks and minor scuffs, again, seen mostly when viewed under angled light. Full-on viewing reveals little at all. One of the few I have seen without fogging to the edges often caused by liberal amounts of adhensive being used (or even reapplication after coming loose). A cover giving a few hints to age and fragility, but still a nice looking example that many collectors will enjoy.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Any traces of waviness very mild and gentle indeed, few will be a great deal flatter. In terms of wear, barely any at all and this looks very nice indeed.

Top Edges: A little gentle rubbing but minimal traces of thickening and near burr-free. The left corner has darkened, but these edges remain neat and so few do.

Bottom Edges: Similar again, some rubbing to the back right corner area.

Right Edge(s), and Type: These are again neat, a little thickened but without any burring of any real note. The record enters on the back and no trimming guaranteed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight and uncrushed with no compression or tilt. Folded square too, all edges meeting up closely together and parallel – this makes a huge difference to visual pleasure for the more discerning collector. No damage or wear at all and all text is unworn under the solid, unpeeled and hardly cracked laminate that has no chips or missing artwork.

Corners: The corners are all very solid and neat looking, the design intact with no erosion or burring. Viewed end-on, some age darkeing and some edge rubbing. But all retain impressive, excellent shape and definition, that a real bonus on this one.

Cover Summary: I cannot reitterate enough just how difficult this cover is. Even if stored carefully and little handled, it can be badly affected by temperature and humidity. This is still quite flat and aged quite well. It remains similarly attractive with only modest wear. So not for the perfectionist, but many collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: and as delicate an inner as you will ever find, similar to the ‘Pepper’ inner and just as fragile. Made from ultra thin paper, non-lined, this is rarely seen untorn or split and often with heavy ringwear from the thick Decca record. This one has barely any rubbing and retains deep colour. Some corner creasing as can be seen but the lack of edge splits is significant and unusual. There are NO seam repairs at all and this will prove quite hard to find a great deal better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or again, very close to. This is a top quality Decca pressing, with very thick vinyl and deeper, wider grooves. The music information lies safely beneath any fineand faint surface marks seen under bright angled light. An early very solidly pressed unboxed stereo copy that has a lovely shine and is intense blackness. Modestly played and devoid of any penetrating scratches. A record more often seen played to near destruction with sound the same. This a lovely record that should please many, if not most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This record plays with very impressive sound that will never be beaten by modern digital formats. Very powerful, rich and detailed audio quality that gives a very different performance to the mono version. Big and bold in dynamics and unique mix and production, both formats are essential. It has terrific genuine high fidelity sound, any audio blemishes are minimal to the point of barely worthy of mention as already mentioned in my preamble - I state this critically, most listeners will enjoy this copy. I am, I hope, a discerning listener and careful grader (I have been told on several occasions I actually undergrade – but I can live with that). This record would please me to own, keep, and enjoy. The sound on this album is special and I found barely any blemishes worthy of note. Even the quieter passages play well with little unwanted. The voices are recorded loud and forward and they rarely avoid clipping. Even the shouted voices at the start of side two are sharp and focused and not masked by crackle as many are. Just holding that vintage cover and hearing the in-built power of this vintage Decca record will please. Play this album loud - the music and sound demands it, and this copy can cope – treated carefully it will last indefintely if played on a modern lightweight deck. These grooves portray almost zero wear and sound is polished, focused and sharp and importantly enjoyable. Like Beatles albums, this, and other Stones albums are so often seen totally trashed and unplayable, hearing this outstanding copy is like a breath of fresh air compared to many. I will never state ‘pristine’ or ‘perfect’ but I feel exceptional is more than appropriate and it’s a really challenging recording and I enjoyed it immensely. A super example and I feel many fans and collectors will treasure it. An all-round copy that merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
