Label Conditions: Both are very clean, fresh and attractive and at last, a mono copy without swathes of spindle marks. In fact, this has the least I have seen on a mono copy of this record. Just a tiny few, very light, fine and faint ones and this record looks very little played. The one blemish is the name of the one and only original owner on side two. This written neatly and quite inconspicuously in a blue-green colour that comes close to matching the actual label, so this really does detract little, and being honest, I did not even initially notice it. So the side two label has a blemish that may concern the purist, but this immensely difficult and quite elusive mono copy will never prove easy to find much better. Especially one offering quality looks and clean sound, always so difficult on this hugely complex album and recording.

Rarity: Mono versions are difficult to find in lightly and carefully played condition. Most listeners at the time who chose the mono format (where there was indeed a choice), did so to play on the appropriate record players of the era. A supremely recorded high fidelity production with complex sounds and information. Highly intolerant of heavy-tracking and thick and often worn mono stylus. Most are seen in very poor conditions with sound to match, at it’s best, this is a phenominal recording with stunning dynamics, details and clarity. Finding lightly played examples is imperative, especially if they are to be played on more critically revealing stereo equipment. Personally, I regard it as one of the very best mono albums ever made, the delivery of the music and content is quite different from the stereo version, and this record does it nigh-on maximum justice.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This Stones will forever be compared to The Beatles Sgt Pepper - their 1967 psych album, many of the major acts of this time were producing albums in this style. Satanic Majesties has never received the full recognition I believe it really deserves. For sure, a massive change of direction from the previous albums and it all may have been too much for many of their fans. Often described as a ‘flawed classic’, but I have heard few flaws myself. A brave and compelling album, a little weird (by their standards) for sure but many moments and songs of true genius - ‘She’s a Rainbow’ and ‘2000 light years from Home’ always sound so much better on this ‘proper’ album rather than compilations, and both songs remain personal favourites within their singles catalogue. This album is a barrage of sound with brass, psychedelia and effects and for The Stones, a real one-off. For me it’s one of those albums that’s totally essential in both mono and stereo as they sound very different. The mono version is more robust with a more punchy sound with greater bass depth and warmth. The stereo version has wonderful imagery and presence. Take the brass blasting out of the speakers at the very start of side one - it hits you full in the face, and the album just does not let up - this is a very intense experience. Play this album loud and you will be left spinning. So often seen in a trashed state, or at best just well played (a sign of those times) with worn, often badly focused sound and even distortion and heavy crackle. The sonic delivery and complex production embedded in these grooves always made this one of the most prone-to-wear records ever made in this period. Early heavyweight mono record players quickly wore into those intricate grooves which ruined the sound. I have heard so few of these that play perfectly throughout, but this splendid copy gives of it’s very best with very little unwanted. With truly astonishing sound and detail and totally lacking that unwanted groove wear and scratch sounds, this is a diamond for more discerning Rolling Stones fan. Even the very intense start to side two plays to an exceptional standard and devoid of the focus loss and major crackle heard on so many. It’s quite clear to me this record has been played only lightly with any surface marks few, fine and light. No arm drops or jolts have occurred on this one and devoid of penetrating scratches. The odd trace of surface sound on the odd very quiet passage is near unavoidable on a 46-year-old mono record, especially when played on a super-critical LP12 stereo front-end turntable. But few available examples will better this significantly I feel sure unless clinical digital silence is mandatory. The cover shows little wear either and the ultra fragile, thin paper inner sleeve is beautiful and totally unsplit. Such copies do not come along often and are to be prized and treasured when they do.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: very prone to damage and oven severe warping due to the adhesion of the 3D picture on the cover front. Atmospheric conditions e.g. humidy, cold and heat react with the glue and make this cover bow, often very badly so it becomes mishapen and even badly bent. Few of these will ever lay dead-flat these days.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT(++): the very famous 3D textured plastic tile cover – a gatefold format with a laminated front and back. The inside is matt, unprotected and smooth. It has the TXL mono prefix and was printed and made in England by Robert Stace. This is the very first format, original, NO peep-hole mono/stereo indicators, they came later in 1969. Includes the red and white inner sleeve.

Cover Lamination: This has always been a difficult cover and it can and does vary considerably in manufacture. The front laminate is superbly adhered and devoid of the crinkles or poor contact many seem to have. Both sides have no lifting and retaining a fresh deep shine, freshness and clarity. Quite possibly the least creasing – barely any of note – I have ever seen on this cover and no dulling, even viewed under angled light. No press marks or scuffs on the shiny card areas and the front lies generally flat with very little hint of bowing from which this cover can often suffer badly, as the 3D box plate adhesive reacts to temperature and humidity. Both sides remain very attractive indeed with rich deep unfaded colour.

The 3D Picture: This famous feature is also in very find condition. I have seen some of these saucer-shaped but this has reacted little to environment or changes over the years. There are some light surface marks and minor scuffs, again, seen mostly when viewed under angled light. Full-on viewing reveals little at all. A little fogging around the very edges where the adhesive was applied – this can vary immensely depending on how liberally it was applied, again this is one of the neater ones I have seen for this. The one small issue, purely within manufacture, it is not quite squarely mounted with a very fine strip of turquoise (the box guide for application) just seen to the right edge, and a super-fine trace on the top – this again is not at all unusual. I presume these 3D squares were hand-applied, and neatness to fixing again highly variable.

Cover Inner Gatefold: In terms of wear, this centrefold has barely any at all. The colour of the gorgeous artwork rich, clean and deep. No creasing, ring marks or ageing, just a faint trace of waving near the centrefold hinge being quite critical, this area will prove very difficult to find better.

Top Edges: Barely any rubbing at all, the back especially very neat and crisp. The single thickness front has only very mild traces of thickening with the odd small and light burr trace – again being very critical.

Bottom Edges: A little natural thickening, indeed very little indeed for a 46-year-old cover’s storage edge. With no damage or scuffing the printed areas of these edges, this is near remarkable.

Right Edge(s), and Type: These are again very neat, a mere trace of thickening but without any burring of any real note. The record enters on the back and no trimming guaranteed to either edge.

Spine and Text: A very impressive spine: solid, mainly straight and uncrushed with no compression or tilt. Folded square also, all edges meeting up closely together and parallel – this makes a huge difference to visual pleasure for the more discerning collector. No damage, chipping or wear at all and all text is unworn under the solid, unpeeled or cracked laminate that has no missing artwork. Incredibly, the surface and BOTH folds remain ultra smooth to the fingertip without a single scuff or rough area at all.

Corners: The corners are in fantastic condition, so often the right fronts can soften and feather. Not the case here. The spine pair are immaculate and there is barely any rubbing to any. No dinks, creasing, all are solid, crisp and very sharp. Immensely difficult to find like this for sure.

Cover Summary: I cannot reitterate enough just how difficult this cover is. Even if stored carefully and little handled, it can be badly affected by temperature and humidity. This is still quite flat and has hardly aged at all. It remains very attractive with most of any blemishes within manufacture. It will certainly prove difficult to find much better and many, if not most collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): and as delicate an inner as you will ever find, similar to the ‘Pepper’ inner and just as fragile. Made from ultra thin paper, non-lined, this is rarely seen untorn or split and often with heavy ring wear from the thick Decca record. This one has barely any rubbing and retains rich, deep and fresh colour. There are NO seam repairs at all and ALL are fully intact. Edge repairs are very easy spotted as any applied adhesive will harden and can be felt with the fingertip. This has NO repairs guaranteed and it looks practically like new. The only reason a full Mint grading was not given is for a fine and faint semi-crease on the left top corner. It has no ink loss or ring wear and the lack of creasing or thumb creasing is almost unheard of. The reason?, the owner put this into a replacement lined inner for better protection of the record, but of course, not only has the record benefited, the fragile inner has too. This has to be the best I have seen yet and few will even get close.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): no hesitation in putting this high grade on this popular mono record that is more often seen trashed. This is a top quality Decca pressing, with very thick vinyl and deeper, wider grooves. The music information lies safely beneath any of the few and very fine faint surface marks seen under bright angled light. An early very solidly pressed unboxed mono copy that has a lovely shine and is intensely black. Very modestly played and devoid of any penetrating scratches with no traumas or accidents. Remember, just one arm-drop, jolt or careless arm placement usually means a ruined or written-off record. Many mono record players tracked at almost unthinkable weights – 10 grams was considered mandatory – so even minor slip-ups often proved fatal for the record. Often grooves stripped by chipped or worn sapphire stylus stubs inflicting invisible wear to the sound – all avoided here again. A record more often seen played to near destruction with sound the same. This a lovely record that gives few clues on vintage should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This record plays with very impressive sound that will never be beaten by modern digital formats. Very powerful, warm and detailed audio quality that gives a very different performance to the stereo version. Big and bold in dynamics and unique mix and production, both formats are essential. It has terrific genuine high fidelity sound, any audio blemishes are minimal to the point of barely worthy of mention as already mentioned in my preamble - I state this critically, most listeners will enjoy this copy. I am, I hope, a discerning listener and careful grader (I have been told on several occasions I actually undergrade – but I can live with that). This record would please me to own, keep, and enjoy. The sound on this album is special and I found few blemishes worthy of note. Even the quieter passages play well with little unwanted – the odd surface trace apart that is near impossible to avoid totally when played on a very revealing Linn/Naim/B&W set-up. Mono records were not really designed to be played on such critical stereo equipment, but when up to the job, they are things of genuine beauty. The voices are recorded loud and forward and they rarely avoid clipping. Even the shouted voices at the start of side two are sharp and focused and not masked by crackle as many are – an intense and difficult start to a record side, this has little to fault. Just holding that vintage cover and hearing the in-built power of this vintage Decca record will please. Play this album loud - the music and sound demands it, and this copy can cope – treated carefully it will last indefintely if played on a modern lightweight deck. These grooves portray almost zero wear and sound is polished, focused and sharp and importantly enjoyable. The gentle surface trace to just remind the listener it is a record into it’s mid-40s, but for me, that is acceptable. The lack of distortion, pops and clicks far more important for me. Truthfully, will any mono record like this ever offer 100% silence sound?, if that is wanted, the digital formats offer just that (but no in mono as far as I know), but will lack that warmth, punch, depth and detail only the early pressed records can. Like Beatles albums, this, and other Stones albums are so often seen totally trashed and unplayable, hearing this outstanding copy is like a breath of fresh air compared to many. I will never state ‘pristine’ or ‘perfect’, but I feel exceptional is more than appropriate and it’s a really challenging recording and I enjoyed it immensely. A super example and I feel many fans and collectors will treasure it. Not quite for the perfectionists, the faint name on label apart, an all-round copy that merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
