Label/Format: Vocalion – pressed by Decca with matt surfaces with a gentle trace of texturing.

Label Conditions: Both clean and attractive, spindle marks are moderate in number, but fine and quite faint. A little burring around the hole on side one as seen. Overall, the record plays very well with a few brief clicks here-and there, more information further down.

Rarity: Rare, most examples are American. Only very small numbers were pressed here, this is not seen or offered often as a first mono UK pressing. Vocalion records were best-known for jazz and blues records, few ‘rock’ acts were ever seen on it, making it a rare item for collectors.

Brief Info: The Seeds were an American psych rock band. Their influence was vast and their music covered garage and acid rock with proto-punk beginnings that spread the genres quickly in the United States. ‘Future’ was their third album that sold moderately in the United States, and went largely overlooked in the UK. Now more psych-sounding which split fans and critics opinions, but now regarded as a classic. UK originals were pressed in tiny numbers by Decca for the predominately jazz label Vocalion, they are seldom seen or offered. Indeed, this is my first ever copy. The cover has aged, mostly on the back, the laminated front remains impressively attractive as seen. The record mostly plays superbly, a few clicks on the first track that has a spoken introduction, any thereafter are few and sporadic. Side two plays with few blemishes at all and little degrades the overall experience of a fantastic album. Not a copy for the audiophile purists, but a plain fact-of-life, mono records this great age get blemishes and will remind of what is being played. That said, this does not have too much to fault and I enjoyed this immensely.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: a single format with front Clarifoil lamination, this cover all folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. The back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press, Includes a Decca-style polylined inner sleeve date-coded 2-68 (February 1968).

Lamination & Front: Typically thin card means a little waving around the thick record shape. The superb graphic remains very impressive under the shiny clear laminate that has minimal dulling. A few creases, but modest in appearance and no lifting. Enough to politely remind of age, but a rare UK-made cover front that can still be enjoyed.

Cover Back: The back has aged more as seen. Moderately grubby near the edges with one dark area near the bottom edge. A small scuff surface tear near the top left corner also. All artwork and lettering intact with any actual rubbing minimal, the same for creasing with most fine near the spine edge. A little wavy near the left side, but hardly major. No hiding the fact it’s aged and not for the purists, but many collectors have no qualms with that. So you takes your choice.

Top Edge: Straight with little wear, a little toning here and there.

Bottom Edge: The bottom edge has some rubbing mostly near the centre.

Right Edge(s), and Type: These edges have thickened with some waving on the back one towards the top. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Still mainly solid with a little bowing and fine, toned hairline cracking of the laminate. But still intact with all the text present and unworn as seen.

Corners: Some rubbing on the tip of the bottom right, the others have fared better. Fine shape mostly retained with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: A cover that has aged, mainly on the back, some general wear with moderate discolourtion/grubbiness. Not quite to the standard I normally offer being honest, but this is a scarce item, finding high-grading originals of these more obscure UK-made American bands is never easy. Not for the highly discerning cover fans, but it will please some more tolerant collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a Decca-style vintage inner, date-coded 2-68 (February 1968), this has aged less. Two corner creases, others lighter. Both window circles crisp and undamaged with the polylining clear and fresh. The paper only gently discoloured and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD(+): a fine visual copy that is clean with nice shine and heavily pressed by Decca. A copy certainly played a few times, but mostly with care. Mostly fine, faint, even wispy surface marks seen under bright light, any of the very few penetrating marks are tiny. Realistically, finding these rarer mono records without any blemishes or audio sound is beyond difficult, so few of these were even sold or pressed. Thus, like this copy, most will have very early mother and stamp codes. Decca-made records were tough and pressed on quality vinyl, they seemed able to withstand the perils of the time better than most. The record mostly plays impressively with little unwanted, so it should please many collectors, but like the cover, not for purists who want perfection at any cost.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A brilliant piece of pop-psych, actually recording started prior to ‘Sgt Pepper’ which some have even compared this to. As a UK copy, this is still something of a ‘lost’ classic within its genre. Overall, this record plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault bar a few clicks here-and-there, mostly on the first some, half of which is spoken word. Deep grooved, the surface marks are ignored and this offers strong, almost distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*, as you would expect from a Decca manufactured disc. So a few clicks to politely remind of what is being played, this mono record is over 50-years-old and how many will survive totally unscathed? I play all my records on a Linn LP12 Sondek, such records were not really designed for such equipment, but this still gave a very fine account of itself, and I enjoyed it immensely. Very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better, UK copies seldom surface and can be highly recommended for many collectors, but not the purists who only want perfection.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
