Condition
Vinyl: VG+ Very clean vinyl surface. Slight scratch on Side A, Track 3 (otherwise excellent). Jacket: VG+ Clean cover front and back with some edge wear, spine split, short partial split at top.Very desirable Yellow and Blue Labels.
The album jacket, one of the greatest, most memorable album covers ever, features a classic photograph of The Skyliners standing in front of a TWA Airliner, with "The Skyliners" name printed as if it were 'in flight.'
In 1959, Calico Records of Pittsburgh released its first album, “The Skyliners”, containing twelve songs, including both sides of the group’s first two self-penned singles, "Since I Don’t Have You”, “One Night, One Night”, “This I Swear," “Tomorrow,” as well as another original, “Tired of Me,” each written by The Skyliners with Joe Rock. The rest of the album is comprised of standards including “Zing Went The Strings of My Heart,” “If I Loved You,” and two songs led by Janet, “When I Fall In Love” and “I Can Dream Can’t I.” Two other standards from the album, “Pennies From Heaven” (inspired by The Clovers version), and “I’ll be Seeing You” would be chosen for the group’s fifth single.
The Skyliners are one of the best known doo-wop groups and, with Jimmy Beaumont's blue-eyed soulful vocals, are considered one of the best harmony groups of all time. Their million selling hit song "Since I Don't Have You" is pop standard and a landmark song in pop music history. With that hit The Skyliners became the first group to feature a string arrangement in a Rock 'n' Roll song. Phil Spector sites “Since I Don’t Have You” as an influence on his "wall of sound" style of the 1960s.
The same recording session that produced “Since I Don’t Have You” also netted two other top 40 singles "This I Swear" that reached number 26 in 1959 and "Pennies From Heaven" that climbed to number 24 in 1960.
This is an essential album for those who love The Skyliners' music and for collectors of early Rock 'n' Roll.
