The Queen Is Dead is the Smiths' great leap forward, taking the band to new musical and lyrical heights.
Opening with the storming title track, The Queen Is Dead is a harder-rocking record than anything the Smiths had attempted before, but that's only on a relative scale -- although the backbeat is more pronounced, the group certainly doesn't rock in a conventional sense.
Instead, Johnny Marr has created a dense web of guitars, alternating from the minor-key rush of "Bigmouth Strikes Again" and the faux rockabilly of "Vicar in a Tutu" to the bouncy acoustic pop of "Cemetry Gates" and "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side," as well as the lovely melancholy of "I Know It's Over" and "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out."
And the rich musical bed provides Morrissey with the support for his finest set of lyrics which deliver a devastating set of clever, witty satires of British social mores, intellectualism, class, and even himself.
He also crafts some of his finest, most affecting songs, particularly in the wistful "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side" and the epic "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out," two masterpieces that provide the foundation for a remarkable album
Track Listing:
Side 1: The Queen Is Dead / Frankly Mr Shankly / I Know It's Over / Never Had No One Ever / Cemetry Gates
Side 2: Bigmouth Strikes Again / The Boy With The Thorn In His Side / Vicar In A Tutu / There Is A Light That Never Goes Out / Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others
LABELS: Clean, bright and unmarked labels with less than a dozen light spindles evident when angled to the light - this copy has seen little play - NEAR MINT
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces still retain their original deep, like new glossy sheen with just one/two (very) light and small hairlines visible - these have no audio consequence - the playback is sensational - NEAR MINT
VINYL Audio: Clean, sharp and warm sound throughout with nothing to fault - no scratches, no jumps/sticks, no clicks/pops and no surface noise (the track divisions and run-ins are practically silent) - the pressing is very, very clean. Overall, a fantastic copy of this wonderful LP which plays to the highest possible standard with great clarity, no groove-wear and no distortion (it's only seen a handful of very careful plays) and is critically graded MINT for audio
SLEEVE: The cover is clean, bright and fresh with little wear to speak of - just a couple of light knocks to the spine and a light touch of 'ring' to the back - both very minor (please see close-up photos) - NEAR MINT
INNER SLEEVE: Clean, unmarked condition with no splits - MINT (The LP is now housed - and will be posted in - a new inner to prevent any 'knifing' damage to the original during transit)
