by Jo-Ann Greene Owen Gray had kicked off his career in the late Fifties, unleashing a stream of exhilarating boogies and exuberant R&B numbers, all of which heavily indebted to the genre's American progenitors. R&B would have as big an influence on the UK, where Gray emigrated in late 1962, as it did on his native Jamaica, but as "You Don't Know Like I Know" well illustrates, each island took the style in very different directions. "Know," was recorded in 1965, at the height of the British Beat Boom, and was overseen by Island label head Chris Blackwell. This was Blackwell's stab at a Stax sound, and a fine one it is, beautifully capturing that seminal soul label's rough and ready style, powerhouse brass arrangement, and funky bass lines. It's only the organ that really gives the game away, and brings the song a distinctive British flavor. Gray, meanwhile, is belting out his own homage to the label, offering up a splendid tribute to Stax artists Sam & Dave, that encapsulates the duo's exhilarating performances. This 45 should have topped the UK chart, but with British radio pointedly ignoring West Indian artists, the single stormed through that community but never broke into the mainstream.
