The Statuettes
OST from The Statue (a.k.a. La Estatua, or La Statua)
Lince 23.001 / 1971 / Argentina
Charlie b/w Skin
1st and only pressing released in 1971 on Lince, Argentina. As usual in this region, the record spins at 33-rpm. This is surely among the top-ten rarest singles issued in Argentina ever! The history concerning this release is quite atypical, and it is because it was released on a local indie label out of Buenos Aires (without national distribution). It features two tracks taken from the OST of the sexploitation film The Statue. Even rarer is the fact that it comes in a picture sleeve (very unusual for a small record company). Not much information is known about the music of this obscure film. Most of the tracks were composed by Riz Ortolani, but apparently, it was never originally issued on any format (except for this rare single from South America!). The flip side contains Skin, which was composed by Luis Enrique Bacalov specifically for this film, and it was erroneously credited to Riz Ortolani on the back of the sleeve, and the label. The IMDB site has also wrongly credited Skin to Tony & The Graduates, an obscure band from Ireland, who recorded a version of Tommy Sands' The Statue, also in 1971 (this has probably contributed to the confusion). I have listened to a sample of that song on John Manship's site (3 or 4 years ago), and it is completely different to this one (in fact, The Graduates never recorded a track entitled Skin). Intentionally or not, the name of the group was spelled wrong as The Stattues (instead of Statuettes, and with a double T). Skin has tremendous organ breaks, and one of the rawest vocals ever!

Please note: although the record was barely played (probably less than 10 times), it sounds just like it is, an indie release (made in South America). There is a factory flaw in the pressing near the end of the B-side, and the audio sounds like it skips 4 or 5 times (it can be heard, but these flaws are not visible, i.e. such as bubbles, dimples, deep scratches, etc.). The surface is shiny and looks almost perfect, and definitely it doesn't skips! A collector friend of mine considers this to be a part of the song, but I don't think so. I had the rare opportunity to hear two previous copies, and they have the same imperfection. So this is the only way we will always find it (if we are lucky enough ever to get one again). The sleeve is in very fine condition, with none of the usual distracting flaws (writings, stickers, ring wear, etc.), which is almost a miracle. It is impossible to find in any condition!
Record: A-side: VG(+) / B-side: VG+, .......... (It has a few light scuff marks, mainly on the A-side, and plays really OK! [Please read the note above]). .......... Both labels are absolutely clean, .......... (NO writings, stickers, dirt, spindle marks, ink stamps and/or wear). .......... Sleeve: G+(+), .......... (NO writings, stickers, tapes, ink stamps, ring wear and/or seam splits, there are three partial splits [one on each side], as well as some light creases and wrinkles).
