Label Conditions: Both look brand new and I am struggling to find a single spindle trace.

Cat Number: (EKS) 74071 (42055).

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture & Rarity: France. The cover has a very small imprint stating this but the rest looks a cross between UK and US style. This has the original US and rare gatefold style cover with superb inner artwork. This appears to be a very early French pressing and includes the original UK EKS 74071 number on the cover and record and also heavily pressed. This is no late repress and I would strongly suggest this was issued in the very early 1970s. Not only that, this record looked unplayed and has pristine sound. UK examples of this album are immensely rare and seldom seen or offered as originals, again the guide prices are a joke. Now a highly sort-after album that sold very poorly indeed on issue. The inclusion of a record little short of mint with pristine sound and the elusive gatefold format cover in lovely condition also makes this a highly desirable piece. I do not offer French or other European albums lightly, Germany apart, but The Stooges were an American band so any non-US copy is ‘foreign’ anyway. When such rare albums are made available in such superb visual and playing conditions, they are not to be dismissed. When did a UK copy of this album get offered on Ebay in Mint condition as an original? This album is rare and always has been from where or whenever pressed.

Original Year of Release: 1970 and I am certainly this one is very early.

Brief Info: Long before television commercials, Iggy Pop (born James Newell Osterberg) fronted one of the most outrageous and raucous American bands of all-time – their music was scored by the critics of the day and virtually ignored by the record-buying public. Hence the three real albums they made, this being second, are immensely rare and highly sort-after, they have become almost legendary in status and elusiveness. The Stooges (often better known as Iggy and The Stooges) split early in 1974 and Pop embarked on what became a relatively successful solo career. With The Stooges, Pop became infamous for his on-stage antics and outrageous behaviour. Often performing near naked and sometimes revealing all, indulging in sexually explicit acts with the audience and smearing himself in peanut butter. Self harming himself with glass on occasions, this man knew no bounds to shock and hype-up the audience. The live shows became infamous for ferocity and noise and although ‘Fun House’ was a studio album, it was recorded live with minimal overdubbing to encapture the raw power of the live shows. It works perfectly, now including Steve Mackay on sax, this album has immense power and sonic venom, it did exactly what the band wanted but no little avail at the time as few even heard it. This French Butterfly pressing is a slight curate’s egg and appears to be a cross between the US and UK version. The US gatefold cover is most welcome with the full artwork on offer, the inside full band picture is superb and rare. The record heavily pressed and including the UK catalogue number as well as the French one. What is important is the sound quality which is pristine, I feel sure this record has barely even been played and a better sounding, cleaner unmarked one will prove near impossible to find. For those who missed out on the young Iggy Pop and his band wreaking havoc to audience ears all those years ago (like most all, and myself very much included) this is a wonderful opportunity to experience the full live studio sound of one of the most influencial artists of his age. Arguably The Stooges gave birth to ‘Punk Rock’. Their sound was as uncompromising as any 70s punk band and even more in yer face. Bring the Iggy Pop Fun into your House with this groundbreaking album, I cannot recommend this one highly enough. This will shred the varnish from you speaker cabinets before ripping off the cloth – PLAY THIS AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+ an unlaminated gatefold format that still includes the original UK EKS catalogue number. Although I have never even seen a UK original, I have been told it never included a gatefold cover, so this is significant sleeve in its own right. Printed and made in France.

Cover Front: Clearly a very wear-prone cover but this has survived the years in tremendous all-round shape. With an American style thick card construction and feel, this retains superbly rich colour with no fading and any rubbing or marks minuscule. Same for creasing of which there are barely any and none of real worthy note. This front looks fantastic.

Cover Back: The back is equally impressive and almost the same again. The odd faint surface crease or two and a little rubbing on the very edges, this being critical. The lack of ringwear is a huge bonus on this.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb and rarely seen here, the full band picture looks practically as made.

Top Edges: Very small and light rubbing only, barely any at all on the back.

Bottom Edges: Mainly light patchy rubbing, more near right corner on back. Being the resting edges, some rubbing on these is no real surprise and few will ever avoid it.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering. The front is sealed and the record enters on the back edge which is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, thick and robust, straight, uncompressed and folded quite square, both right edges meet up fairly closely and certainly parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and there is little wear to the surface up to the very top and bottom that has faint rubs.

Corners: A little mild tip rubbing and a couple of tip creases but overall neat and quite sharp.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. Finding this legendary pre-punk album cover is hard enough in-itself no matter where it was printed and this French one looks superb. Few will be disappointed with this I am sure.

The Inner: EX++, to confuse things further, this came with a UK-made plain white, unlined inner that has the text ‘Patents Applied for’. I cannot guarantee this as the original that came with this copy, but as all others from the collection it came from were, I cannot think of any reason why this should be different.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Undergraded Mint(-). A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with barely a noteworthy mark or blemish and this could easily pass for new. Visually an incredible record that should please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This groundbreaking record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Very powerful, distortion-free, dynamic sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. No surface sounds or pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, with intense volume and full-on sound for most all, who would notice anyway? Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly (if at all) and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, my first ever on vinyl. This copy will prove nigh-on impossible to find better and can be unreservedly recommended. This is not Pop music – this is POP MAYHEM – Brilliantly Scary Stuff!

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). The record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
