A popular Toronto band during the late '60s, the Sugar Shoppe released several singles during 1967-68 and a self-titled debut album for Capitol in 1968. The group comprised pianist Laurie Hood and vocalists Victor Garber, Lee Harris and Peter Mann.

What’s most striking about The Sugar Shoppe  is how well the foursome adapted songs of various origins (folk, country, soul, rock, and showtunes) into their chosen sunshine-pop genre.  Thanks to an inventive repertoire, as well as an emphasis on melody and lush harmonies, this debut confidently transcends its Mamas and the Papas influences.  Despite the group’s name and song titles like “The Candy Children Song,” The Sugar Shoppe isn’t treacly bubblegum.  Instead, it's smartly-arranged orchestral California pop from four talented twentysomethings with their eyes on the then-current scene.

Though reports surfaced at the time that a follow-up for Capitol was being planned, no such album arrived.  Following the Epic single, the group continued to perform, with particular success in Canada.  The Sugar Shoppe disbanded in 1970, but shortly thereafter, it was reborn as, simply, The Shoppe.  But that iteration – with Mann, Garber and Sandy Crawley – didn’t last, only yielding recordings for a couple of various-artists anthologies.  By 1973, The Sugar Shoppe’s members had gone their separate ways, with Garber’s acting career taking off, Mann working behind-the-scenes in television, and Hood continuing as a singer and background vocalist.  Lee Harris valiantly struggled offstage with multiple sclerosis, and passed away in the early 1990s.

The soft and yes, sweet, pop of The Sugar Shoppe will surely take you back to that “world young and free” the group sung about all those years ago.  The Sugar Shoppe shouldn’t be missed.

·      CONDITION:

·      THE RECORD

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         The record comes in a hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(d)         Mono copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(e)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a partially split top seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-       Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 6 and 8 inches  /15 to 20 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-       Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-       Cover has a tiny, barely visible cutout hole in one of the corners

-       Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)
