As the first Temptations hits package Motown released, Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 appeared a little over two years into the group's career, but it remains an excellent hits collection. Not all of the 12 tracks were giant hits -- "The Girl's Alright with Me," "Since I Lost My Baby," "It's Growing" and "I'll Be in Trouble" never became as ubiquitous as "The Way You Do the Things You Do," "My Girl," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" and "Get Ready," all of which are included here -- but the lesser-known tracks are terrific in their own right and help make the album a dynamic experience. Nevertheless, those minor hits and album tracks date Greatest Hits, illustrating that it was released during the group's extraordinary run. They also mean that anyone looking for a definitive single-disc collection should look to the latter-day collections, which contain all the hits from this album and Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 and thereby offer a better bargain for the casual fan.

This is the rare first pressing of the Temptations' first 'greatest hits' package, issued in 1966. The group would go on to pretty much single-handedly define R&B group vocal harmonies of the mid-to-late 1960's, but on these early tracks, they were clearly beholden to gospel, blues and early crossover such as Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke. And those harmonies are nothing short of mind-boggling. The album sports some of the most intense R & B vocal acrobatics captured on record, ever. (a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Visible (coffee?) stain noted on the back panel.  (less than 4 square inches in size)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the bottom seam

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
