NEWTRITION - THE VERSATILE NEWTS (1980 Single on Shanghai Records)

This is a rarely available one-off single by the minimalist duo The Versatile Newts.  The vinyl is in fantastic condition.  So is the unusual fold-over cover, which comes in its own plastic sleeve.  The record labels are both hand-stamped (see photo).  I don't how many copies were made but there really can't have been very many - everything about the record says 'home made'.

Nick Gilbert and 'Lawrence' formed the Newts after 'Lawrence' had recorded his own single as a casette in September 1979, under the name Felt (released as Shanghai No. 1).  The Versatile Newts' single came out as Shanghai No. 2 in early 1980.  Shortly after the Newts, Maurice Deebank joined Nick and 'Lawrence' and they began playing together as Felt.

The  b-side is 'Blimp', which, at 1' 39", outlasts the a-side by 3 seconds!  Both the Newts and Shanghai Records were based at Water Orton, Birmingham. 

Amazingly, no-one has ever claimed that the Versatile Newts were a major influence on their music.  This is your opportunity to own their complete works!
