The Who : Sell Out A2/B1 1st Mono Press 1967 + Original Poster!

This first mono pressing on the Track Record label has been beautifully preserved over the last 56 years and is a FINAL UPGRADE archive classic without question.  It also comes complete with the original poster which just happens to be in superb condition also, it is practically 'as new'.

The audio on both sides just has to be heard to be believed!  There are no clicks, pops or static and just one very minor tick on S2 that you could easily miss in all honesty.  The clarity, depth and resonance of the audio is second to none and as detailed below this is a vinyl that quite clearly has hardly ever been played.  I cannot emphasise enough just how STUNNING the sonic quality is - this is a genuine collectors item i.e. time capsule standard!  The vinyl is also visually stunning with only a handful of barely visible hairlines and again I cannot put into words just how fantastic it looks!  This is easily one of the 'cleanest' vinyls I have ever discovered from this classic era.

The laminated cover is in great condition with only minimal wear and still has the FREE PSYCHEDELIC POSTER INSIDE sticker on the back.  The original inner is also in excellent shape.  As mentioned the original 6 panel poster remains in fantastic condition with no obvious wear.

As this is a genuine first press it has the A2/B1 matrix and the cover is laminated on both sides.  The record also ends with a locked groove so an audio 'piece' keeps repeating.  As is well documented only 1,000 posters were issued with this album (500 each for mono and stereo) and the matrix (as below) was actually the first to be pressed.  It makes sense that the first ones off the 'printing press' were the ones to be issued with the poster.

Visual description

The vinyl really is a work of art!  It is in beautiful condition and has hardly been handled let alone played.  It still has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen with no marks or scratches and even under a bright light I can only find a handful of mega faint sleeve removal hairlines on each side.  You would be forgiven for thinking this record was 'as new' at first glance that is a measure of how visually stunning it is!  The run out grooves are extremely clean and the iconic Track Record labels are unmarked with just a couple of small spindle trails on S1 and nothing on S2!

Play grading

The first 'announcement' plays with perfect clarity even as the volume decreases and then 'Armenia City In The Sky' plays with incredible power and depth from the outset.  Keen's vocals are so strong and clear and from start to finish there is no background of any kind.  It still has that deep rich mono sound even though I am playing it through my stereo set up.  It certainly plays with a greater depth and resonance compared to its stereo equivalent and the sonic quality is further enhanced with a vinyl that is as clean and visually stunning as this one!  You can add hardly played to that also! This is without doubt a Mint start to the side - a STUNNING version.

'Heinz Baked Beans' plays to the same high end standard with no intrusion.  The clarity is 'as new' and Mint is fully deserved.

'Mary Anne With The Shaky Hands' continues this exceptional start to the album and plays without any interference.  Once again it's the overall depth of the audio that stands out and the clarity of course.  I cannot overstate just how clear and precise the audio is and that applies to Moon's frenetic ending also.  There is no distortion anywhere and Mint is again the only grade I can give.

The 'segue' into 'Odorono' is faultless and the intro is equally as strong.  Townshend opening vocal is crystal clear and it continues to play with impeccable quality for the remainder.  Every vocal and instrumental section play like they have never been played before that's how good the audio is!  There is nothing that detracts from the audio and again there is no need for a minus as this is just Mint in every single way.

The classic 'Tattoo' plays beautifully throughout with NO interference.  From the intro and Daltrey's first vocal right through to the final note it could not play with any greater definition.  It is so rare to find this album playing with a sonic quality such as this and no word of a lie every track so far can be described 'as new'.  Mint

The next ad plays to perfection and then 'Our Love Was' more than keeps up the standard with sublime quality throughout and of course no ticks, clicks, jumps, pops or static.  There are no negatives and despite being a 'busy' track there is no 'muddiness' to the sound and no distortion either.  Another Mint track.

'I Can See For Miles' is easily one of the finest examples I have EVER heard.  On both the stereo and mono versions I often find there is some inner groove distortion but this undoubtedly one of the 'cleanest' versions you are ever likely to hear.  It plays with stunning power and depth and you can easily turn it up to max without having to turn it down immediately!  I will grade as Mint- as perhaps the clarity towards the end isn't quite on the same level as the previous tracks but that is being super critical.  Maybe 9.5 / 10 as opposed to 10 /10 on the preceding tracks!  But wow what a side!

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The first 'ad' on S2 has no background and then 'Can't Reach You' again plays with unbelievable clarity, depth and warmth from the first note to the last.  Entwistle's bass adds so much to the overall sound and there is not even a single tick to be heard let alone anything more.  Mint

'Medac' is so close to perfect with just one very light tick towards the end, the first on the album!  Mint-

'Relax' again demonstrates in so many ways just how well this vinyl has been preserved over the last 56 years.  It plays with outstanding power and clarity with no sign of any interference.  Another Mint version.

Entwistle's opening vocal on 'Silas Stingy' is flawless and it continues to play with a clarity that is second to none.  Each note can be heard so clearly and it just could not play any better.  A Floydian psychedelic sound you could say and 'as new' sums it up perfectly.  Mint

The acoustic intro on 'Sunrise' plays beautifully with no intrusion and Townshend's vocal through every section is so clean and precise and again you just have to marvel at the clarity on offer here.  A relatively quiet track and yet there is literally no interference not even a dust tick.  I am now running out of superlatives for this STUNNING album!  Without question another sublime Mint track.

The intro on 'Rael (1 and 2)' has no background and it continues to play with incredible depth and warmth from then onwards.  There is no intrusion on Daltrey's vocal and there is no distortion as you approach the end of the side.  In essence it could not play any better so you know the grade.  The final instrumental section in particular is stunning - the power and depth of the audio is superb and the closing vocal has no intrusion either.  Mint is once again a fair assessment of the audio.  As this is a first pressing it ends with the usual 'snippet' of audio inside a locked groove so you have to manually lift the stylus.

In summary...well it just does not get any better than this!  This is clearly a vinyl that has hardly ever been played based on its STUNNING visual look and of course the phenomenal sonic quality.  I have sold only a handful of mono versions down the years but this is the finest example I have ever encountered.  With just one very light tick on S2 (that you could easily miss) it very much qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE time warp classic as it plays beautifully from start to finish.  How many of the first 500 with the original poster play as well as this?  It can't be many that's for sure!  A genuine classic that delivers on so many levels and will obviously add to any high end Mint collection.  With a superb cover also it definitely has the wow factor!

The Cover, Original Poster & Inner Sleeve

The laminated E.J. Day cover is in superb condition and as can be seen still has the original FREE PSYCHEDELIC POSTER INSIDE sticker on the back.  The edges and thin pinched spine have no rubbing / marking and the corners are also very strong with only very minimal wear.  The opening edge is also in great shape with only a couple of minor crimps.  The front cover is unmarked and has just a little laminate creasing in the top corners and the bottom left one.  The back cover is just as strong with just one minor crease bottom right and some creasing / crimping in the top corners but this does not stand out.  Overall this is a very impressive first mono press cover.

The original psychedelic poster is in fantastic condition with no marking or tears and only the bare minimum of creasing on one of the centre 'folds'.  The back is also super clean without any marking or fading.  It is very obvious it has hardly ever been removed from the cover, it is stunning!

The original poly-lined inner is in excellent order with no side splits and barely any marking.  It just has a little creasing and a couple of tiny 'nicks' on the top edge.
