DETAILS

Other members of the band try their hand at writing songs, at the urging of new manager Kit Lambert, a man almost as legendary in The Who's history as any of the members themselves. The results here are wildly inconsistent, but that just adds to the album's character.

A Quick One is a great album because the band is having a lot of fun. And you can tell every time you listen. Of the writers of material for this album, John Entwistle emerges as the one guy who had the best chance to keep pace with Pete Townsend. "Boris the Spider" would end up being one of the band's best-loved tracks and was always a highlight in their live sets until his untimely death. "Whiskey Man" is another fun novelty tune.

Keith Moon turns in the wild, wacky "Cobwebs and Strange" mainly as a showpiece for his drumming, but it's also noted for its instrument-switching antics. Hearing Roger Daltrey try to play the trombone here is hysterical, although Townsend plays a mean pennywhistle. Moon also pens "I Need You" as a tribute to the Bag O'Nails club.

Daltrey's contribution is the respectable but slight Buddy Holly-esque "See My Way." Pete Townsend still carries the album, but seems to enjoy the brief respite from all the songwriting duties. He puts forth the first of what he called "rock opera", the 9-minute epic redemption story "A Quick One While He's Away". It's really several songs with a central theme stitched together; you can hear some of the edits as the song transitions from one part to the next.

Other standouts include "Run Run Run", and a great overlooked deep cut in "So Sad About Us".
