When Monk and Coltrane spent six months (beginning in the summer of 1957) working together at New York's Five Spot Cafe, it was an historic event which certainly should have been exhaustively recorded. But nonmusical conflicts made that impossible, leaving as the only permanent reminders of the momentous encounter the three remarkable quartet selections that highlight this album.

CRISS CROSS COLUMBIA SONY RECORDS CL-2038 MONO ISSUE - Cut in a series of sessions from late 1962 through early 1963, this album features Monk backed by his longtime sideman Charlie Rouse on tenor and rhythm men Frank Dunlop on drums and John Ore on bass. The material is basically standard Monk. Heard hear are such Monk standards as "Hackensack", "Rhythm-A-Ning", and a superior Monk solo on "Crepuscule With Nellie". Overall the performances are exciting and energetic, the title track "Criss-Cross" stands out. This is fairly typical Monk from his Columbia years. He has long since established his personal style, but he still has a fresh imagination and produces fantastic performances throughout. Charlie Rouse is in top form as well. He was Monk's main hornman from the late 50's through most of the 60's. His extended stay within the realms of Monk's compositions and accompaniment pays off in a singular musical understanding between the two. He was such a part of Monk's group sound that a few of these tracks would sound odd with another hornman playing them. This is very nearly a great Monk album, and is recommended to all fans, or those new to his music.

MONK'S BLUES PC 9806 COLUMBIA/SONY STEREO ISSUE - Monk made idiosyncrasy a way of life and a way of music--all without artifice or cliché. He was unrepeatable and unforgettable. No one else sounds much like him, although I have a George Russell recording where Russell (more known as an arranger than a soloist) betrays some influence.

Monk is most known for his quartets, but this is a big band setting with multi-layered and swinging arrangements by Oliver Nelson. Yet Monk is still Monk: the use of space, always playing the melody, the long, inimitable arpeggios, the percussive sensibility, the serious playfulness and earnestness without being precious or pretentious.

Yes, Monk tended to play the same tunes repeatedly at this point in his career, but these renditions shine, nevertheless. Listen. Enjoy. Be thankful. Human are bestowed with the ability to manifest beauty.

MONK COLUMBIA/SONY RECORDS CS-9091 STEREO ISSUE - The familiar "formula" that Monk utilized throughout most of his '60s tenure at Columbia was firmly in place on this, his fourth album for the label. But that recipe--originals sprinkled with covers, played by a quartet of familiar sidemen (veteran tenor sax accomplice Charlie Rouse, newer compatriots Ben Riley on drums, and bassist Larry Gales)--proves deceptively facile on the expanded reissue of this 1965 album. While Gershwin's elegant "Liza" and the standard "April in Paris" are perfect fodder for the pianist's harmonic and rhythmic tweaking, his playful take on the children's song "That Old Man" ably demonstrates how the musician could recast even the most foursquare composition in his own likeness. Even more revealing is Monk's solo exploration of the hoary "I Love You (Sweetheart of My Dreams)," a performance where his left hand seems to mine the stride foundations of his beloved J.P. Johnson, while his right flits restlessly in a different half-century. Rouse takes rewarding turns in the spotlight on "Just You, Just Me" and "Pannonica" (the latter normally a Monk solo excursion), 

IT'S MONK TIME COLUMBIA RECORDS CS-8984 STEREO ISSUE - Recorded in 1964 and one of the best Monk albums available from the CBS period. Personnel consists of Thelonious Monk (piano), Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), Butch Warren (bass) and Ben Riley (drums). Contains a great 9'55 version of 'Lulu's Back In Town'

180g Vinyl Double LP Release Of Never-Before-Released Concert!

Blue Note Records has announced the release of Thelonious Monk Paris 1969, a fascinating and important late-career document of the legendary jazz pianist and composer in performance with his Quartet at the Salle Pleyel concert hall in Paris, France on December 15, 1969.

The 1969 Paris concert captures the power and the undiminished beauty of Monk’s music, reminding us that even as his body aged his musical imagination knew no limits, writes Monk scholar Robin Kelley in his liner notes essay. However, Kelley also illuminates what a peculiar and challenging moment 1969 was for the 52-year-old pianist. Monk hadn’t achieved true success until the late-'50s with his legendary run at the Five Spot Café in New York City with John Coltrane. By the early-'60s Monk’s success had peaked when he signed with Columbia Records and was eventually featured on the cover of TIME Magazine in 1964.

However, by 1969, in addition to health issues, Monk’s success was beginning to wane with the emergence of rock and the resulting jazz fusion movement. His recording contract with Columbia had just come to end after an ill-advised attempt at marketing him to a younger rock audience. That disappointment was followed by the departure of drummer Ben Riley and bassist Larry Gales from his band which left Monk with two chairs to fill on short notice before his European tour.

Monk eventually found two young musicians – bassist Nate Hygelund and drummer Paris Wright  to fill out the Quartet with his longtime tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse. Luckily the inexperienced rhythm section had some time to gel before hitting the stage in Paris with a lengthy engagement in London followed by stops in Germany and Italy. By the time they reached the Pleyel the band was in fine form, which made for a triumphant return for Monk to the very stage he had made his Parisian debut on in 1954 in front of a hostile audience who felt that Monk was too avant-garde. 15 years later the situation could not have been more different with an enthusiastic audience and the concert being broadcast on television.

In addition to rollicking Quartet versions of Monk classics such as “I Mean You, Straight No Chaser, and Blue Monk, the set also includes three stunning solo piano performances on Don’t Blame Me, I Love You Sweetheart Of All My Dreams, and Crepuscule With Nellie. However, an undeniable highlight of the concert was when the veteran drummer Philly Joe Jones who was an expat living in Paris at the time comes from backstage to borrow the sticks from the 17-year-old Wright, providing a palpable spark on Monk’s Nutty.
