Originally released in 1981, this has always been something of a hidden gem in the Irish rock legends' catalogue. Renegade is a record that bridges the raw intensity of Jailbreak and the darker experimentation that would culminate in Thunder and Lightning. With this 2025 reissue, the album finally receives the recognition it deserves: highlighting the efforts of Phil Lynott's songwriting at its most ambitious and versatile. The opener, 'Angel of Death'. sets the stage with a chilling, synth-laced atmosphere before crashing into apocalyptic riffs that mirror its prophetic lyrics. The title track, 'Renegade', takes Lynott's fascination with outsiders and rebels into more thoughtful territory, pairing his storytelling with music that shifts between quiet contemplation and explosive release. Elsewhere, Lizzy prove their stylistic range: 'Hollywood (Down on Your Luck)' is urban hard rock, while 'Mexican Blood' unveils Lynott's gift as a storyteller, a ballad as evocative as anything in the band's repertoire. 'Fats' veers into jazzy swing, playful yet precise and 'Leave This Town' is pure rock 'n' roll boogie that is irresistibly fun. The closer, 'It's Getting Dangerous," grows in stature with repeated listens, as an underappreciated track in their career. More than just a comeback after the mixed reception of Chinatown, Renegade is one of Lizzy's most complete records, balancing toughness and tenderness in ways only Lynott could. The band's eleventh album at the time, shows the band has more potential to give as it started a new decade.
