Blue Afternoon was Tim Buckley's first self-produced record and his debut for Herb Cohen and Frank Zappa's Straight label. Buckley's first two albums were very much of their time and place, with their psychedelically tinged folk-rock compositions; naïve, romantic lyrical content; and moments of earnest protest. The introduction of acoustic bass and vibes into the arrangements on Happy Sad signaled a change in direction, however, and Blue Afternoon displayed similar jazz tendencies, using the same group of musicians plus drummer Jimmy Madison. Several tracks on Blue Afternoon are songs Buckley had intended to record on earlier albums but had not completed. The brooding "Chase the Blues Away" and the lighter, more upbeat "Happy Time," for instance, are numbers he had worked on in the summer of 1968 for possible inclusion on Happy Sad. (Demos can be heard on Rhino's Works in Progress album.) Here, as he did on Happy Sad, Buckley takes the folk song as his starting point and expands it, drawing on jazz influences to create new dynamics and to emphasize atmosphere and mood. This approach can be best appreciated on the mournful "The River," as simple acoustic guitar, cymbals, and vibes build a fluid, ebbing, and flowing arrangement around Buckley's beautiful, melancholy vocals. The period between 1968 and 1970 was an intensely creative one for Tim Buckley. Remarkably, during the same four weeks in which he recorded Blue Afternoon, he also recorded its follow-up, Lorca, and material for Starsailor. It's not surprising, then, that Blue Afternoon hints at Buckley's subsequent musical direction. While not in the experimental, avant-garde vein of the more challenging material on those next two albums, "The Train" foregrounds Lee Underwood's quietly intense, jazzy guitar and Buckley's vocal prowess, prefiguring the feeling of tracks like Lorca's "Nobody Walkin'" and Starsailor's "Monterey."

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY WILSON NEATE, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

Of all moody, minor-key 1960's albums, this one - as the title suggest - has got to be one of the moodiest, minor-key-est and most introvert of them all, certainly in terms of its overall texture, structure and form (contents, too). It also happens to be one of Tim Buckley's most beloved works and one of the true gems of the psychedelic singers/songwriters era. Done in one bold stroke during the summer of 1969 (the recording sessions also produced material for his "Lorca" album, for a different label - Elektra), Buckley recorded this gorgeous work just as he was contemplating the direction his music and his life were taking at this point. He apparently believed that he was needlessly being pushed into commercialism and he decided to take a 180-degree turn. Before he exploded into full-fledged hermeticism of the "Starsailor" (1970), he managed to record an album that everyone could - and would - love, and relate to. This is the music to drift away by. Music to meditate on the meaning of Cosmos, or - simply - music to watch people go by. A timeless piece of meditative, transcendent, luminous poetry, backed by an incredibly talented and competent, but also unobtrusive and subtle bunch of musicians. The original album, recorded for Frank Zappa's "Bizzare" label, sold a meager few thousand copies and promptly disappeared from the stores. Grab this great, legendary loner-folk psych album before someone else does!!

·      CONDITION:

·      THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. (NOTE: SIDE 1 IS IN A SLIGHTLY BETTER CONDITION THAN SIDE 2 AND PROBABLY DESERVES TO BE GRADED NEAR MINT).

(b)          The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Small (3") piece of clear scotch tape is noted on the front leg of the opening side. PLEASE NOTE: the seam is NOT split; the tape appears to have been placed there as a precautionary measure and can probably be removed with a little effort.

-       Cover has some ring wear.  On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (front side) and 5 (back side); Inside gatefold has some light ring wear as well.

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-       Visible shelf wear noted on the top seam and spine

-       Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

-       Cover has some fraying/wear along the opening side

-       Cover has a tape residue (yellowish discoloration from the removed piece of old and aged scotch tape)  along the opening side  (nothing significant) (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)

-       Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged

-       Cover has some writing on the inner gatefold (January 1970 date written in blue ballpoint pen, about 1/4 x 1½  inches in size)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
