RACIONAL VOL 1
Tim Maia Racional, Vol. 1 is the fifth studio album by Brazilian singer and composer Tim Maia. The album was released by Tim Maia in 1975 on his label Seroma. In 1974 Tim Maia became involved with the Racional Cultura religious sect, "Racional Vol. 1" was devoted to the sect and their beliefs. Musically, the album resembles North American Soul and Funk artists such as Barry White, Marvin Gaye, Sly Stone and George Clinton. According to Paulinho Guitarra, who participated in the recording of the disk, the actual tracks were recorded 1974. However, as a result of his involvement in Racional Cultura Tim Maia changed the lyrics and song titles to reflect his newfound beliefs. Tim Maia's conversion significantly changed his performance, which previously had been marred by his heavy drinking and drug abuse. After recording two full albums and leaving an incomplete third volume, Tim Maia became disenchanted with Racional Cultura. His disavowal of the sect also resulted in the destruction of all remaining copies, as well as not allowing any of them to be re-pressed or re-issued. Regardless of Tim Maia's grief and harsh criticism of the album, Racional Vol. 1 is considered one of the finest moments of his career and the remaining original pressings have become extremely desirable and sought after. In the US Rolling Stone magazine ranked Racional #17 in the "100 greatest albums of Brazilian music" list.
