Description
Hey kids, do you like the rare records? Well here's a certified rarity. It is the original pressing of TODD RUNDGREN's "RUNT" on Ampex Records (A-10105, light blue label). This is the rare original pressing with extra tracks that don't appear on later pressings. Side A has listings on the cover and label for 6 tracks while the record has 7 bands (tracks). Side B has listings for 4 tracks on the cover and label and has bands for 5 tracks. To make it even more different than the 'regular' 10 track version, many of the tracks are either different versions or different mixes than the more common release (detailed below). This is also one of the first few albums on the 'then' new AMPEX RECORDS which later became Bearsville
This is a beautiful copy. The cover has some minor wear and a few scuffs but is a very strong VG+. The record itself is in Vg condition, having been play graded on a good turntable (Denon direct drive with Shure V-15 cartridge). There is some surface noise throughout the record but no skips or scratches. (Much of the noise may be eliminated by the use of a good record cleaner/vac.) I just cleaned the record again and replayed it and could tell an improvement. The vinyl still has it's original luster. The original inside record sleeve with lyrics and band pictures is included also.
The important thing is THE MUSIC. Fresh off the limited success of NAZZ, Todd teamed up with the Sales brothers (Hunt & Tony, later 1/2 of Bowie's Tin Machine) and, as in future releases, played many of the instruments himself. Now considered one of the best producers of all time, you can almost sense Todd's excitement at being in a well equipped studio. The big hit here is the classic "We Gotta Get You a Woman" but that is not typical of the rest of the music here. Musically Todd is all over the place, from jazzy workouts that would sound at home on a Soft Machine record ("I'm In the Clique") to his signature ballads ("Baby Let's Swing"), moody instrumentals ("There Are No Words"), hard guitar rock, and even bluesy rock ("Broke Down & Busted"). It's like a big ole "Todd Rundgren sampler platter".
