As a first stab at assembling a compilation of Tom Waits' tenure at Asylum Records, the U.K.-only Bounced Checks is a reasonable effort, though it's far from what could be done with the catalog. Apparently put together by the artist and his manager, which may help explain the absence of anything from the first album, Closing Time, it is a ten-track disc, four tracks of which are previously unreleased. There are alternate masters of "Jersey Girl" and "Whistlin' Past the Graveyard," a live performance of "The Piano Has Been Drinking," and "Mr. Henry," a leftover from the Heartattack and Vine sessions. Some of Waits' best is here. You can't argue with selections like "Tom Traubert's Blues" or the Bette Midler duet "I Never Talk to Strangers." But where are favorites like "Ol' 55" and "(Looking For) The Heart of Saturday Night"? It's probably not possible to do Waits' seven Asylum LPs justice on a single ten-track disc. But Bounced Checks is more to be sought out by hardcore Waits fans who want to own the rarities than neophytes who are looking for a best-of.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The album comes with its original insert / lyrics sheet

(c)           The record comes in its original poly-lined, custom, inner sleeve, which is UNIQUE to this album.

(d)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a TINY, barely visible peel-off mark (less than 1/8 square inch in size), probably from the careless removal of the price sticker; the mark has been delicately masked (camouflaged)by the previous owner with a like-colored (black) marker

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No yellowing from aging

-        No stamps (except for small Warner Brothers embossment stamp on back panel)

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
