Heartattack and Vine (1980) is the seventh studio album by Tom Waits. It marks the end of his early "Asylum Records" era. The album blends raw blues and gritty R&B with beautiful, sentimental ballads.

The Title: The title track and album name play on the famous Los Angeles intersection of Hollywood and Vine. It describes the seedy, gritty underbelly of urban street life.
The Lineup: The record was produced by long-time collaborator Bones Howe and features guest guitar work by Roland Bautista.
Key Tracks: It includes the famous romantic ballad "Jersey Girl", which Bruce Springsteen famously covered. It also features "On the Nickel," a heartbreaking tribute to the homeless population living on 5th Street in Los Angeles.
A Lawsuit for History: The title track was covered by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. In 1993, Levi's used this cover without Waits' permission in a massive TV commercial. Waits sued the company in Europe and won a historic settlement, which changed the legal landscape for using an artist's voice and music in commercials without permission.
A Turning Point: Fans and critics see the album as a transition. It forecasted the chaotic, avant-garde style Waits would fully embrace on his next album, Swordfishtrombones (1983).
