TONY OXLEY – Four COMPOSITIONS For Sextet ORIG CBS LP / S 64071 (UK, Stereo, 1970)
Happy to present this most challenging of albums, the February 7th, 1970 single session featuring Oxley, Derek bailey, Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Rutherford & Jeff Clyne. This is a super playing copy which looks lovely too.
The single, front-laminated sleeve made by Shorepak, UK is in a pleasing VG+ (Very Good Plus) condition. It maintains an excellent spine, has good edges and hardly any feathering to the opening sides. There is no writing, rips or splits. There are some spots of residue on the front some small light creases, a larger but softer one to the bottom right front and a sticker shade to the top rear. The top edges have come apart at some stage but been glued back together. All in all, still looking good for its 42 years.
The deep orange CBS labels are in superb condition, looking close to mint with no writing, stickers, scrapes and showing only one tiny spindle trace per side, if that. Lovely pair of these vintage labels.
The medium weight vinyl is in a true, lightly played EX (Excellent) condition if not better. One fine hairline to Side 1, a minor scuff to the same side and a couple of smaller scuffs to the other side. No scratches, scrapes or embedded dirt. IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and importantly for an LP which features many virtually silent sections, plays very well indeed – at least on a par with the visual grade of EX. Side 1 played virtually faultless while I picked up the occasional click and some light ticks to the first track on Side 2, that is all. An LP like this with such delicate passages needs to be looked after and this one has been. Sounds superb!

I do not use any more than ONE plus or minus between grades. After all, WHAT ON EARTH DOES VG+++++ MEAN? What is NM+? Or EX---? These are just some of the ridiculous gradings I’ve encountered on eBay. I am very careful using the EX (Excellent) grade. Excellent, by dictionary definition means‘extremely good’ NOT ‘marked and slightly beat up with wear’!
