ACCORDING TO THE INDIVIDUAL WE ACQUIRED THIS ITEM FROM, THIS LP ALBUM COMES FROM THE ESTATE OF A WELL-KNOWN DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE REVIEWER (THE SELLER WOULD NOT REVEAL HIS IDENTITY).  WHILE WE WERE UNABLE TO EXTRACT THE NAME OF THE REVIEWER IN QUESTION,  WE ARE CONVINCED THAT THE PERSON IS NONE OTHER THAN THE LEGENDARY JAZZ GURU ►NAT HENTOFF, BEING THAT THE ITEM WAS ACQUIRED WITHIN WEEKS FROM HIS PASSING (JANUARY 2017) AND MOST LIKELY AS A RESULT OF HIS ESTATE LIQUIDATION. WHAT IS REMARKABLE ABOUT THIS AND OTHER ITEMS COMING FROM THE SAME SOURCE (WHICH ARE ALL PROMOTIONAL ITEMS OR REVIEWER COPIES) - IS INCREDIBLE STATE OF PRESERVATION. Tony Scott was one of only a few clarinettists to play bop and his cool tone separated him from the crowd and the harder, more driving playing of Buddy DeFranco. '52nd St. Scene' features such luminaries of the Jazz scene as Coleman Hawkins, Pee Wee Russell, Al Cohn and others and includes great tunes such as, "Body And Soul", "Round Midnight" and the seminal "Lester Leaps In".

“52nd Street Scene” is a varied and exciting album, which features three distinct line-ups; the most traditional being trumpeter Joe Thomas, trombonists J.C. Higginbotham & Wilbur de Paris, clarinettists Tony Scott & Pee Wee Russell, pianist Sonny White, drummer Denzil Best, Oscar Pettiford on bass and Al Casey on guitar. They introduce the album, with a masterful 11-minute slow blues, in which all get to showcase, and “Love is Just Around the Corner”. A smaller group, comprising Coleman Hawkins, Tony Scott, pianist Tommy Flanagan, Gene Ramey on bass and Walter Bolden on drums, follow with “Body and Soul”, and they’re joined by Jimmy Knepper on trombone for “Ornithology”, which concludes the album. The intervening five tracks feature Tony Scott on clarinet & baritone sax, with Al Cohn on tenor, Red Rodney on trumpet, trombonist Jimmy Knepper, pianist George Wallington, Oscar Pettiford on bass, Roy Haynes on drums, and Mundell Lowe on guitar.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. PLEASE NOTE: SUPERFICIAL - VISIBLE, BUT NOT FEELABLE - SCUFF AFFECTS THE ENTIRE SIDE 1; ON SIDE 2, MINOR 'HAIRLINE' SCUFF AFFECTS THE LAST THREE TRACKS; NEITHER SCUFF IS EXPECTED TO BE AUDIBLE; OTHER THAN THESE ABRASIONS, THE DISC IS TOTALLY FREE OF BLEMISHES AND DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE PLAYED MUCH, IF AT ALL.

(b)          The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Blue Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 200:1.

(f)            Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(g)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-        The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.  (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the top seam
