By the late 90s, Chicago's Tortoise had already redrawn the boundaries of post-rock, shifting it away from guitars and angst toward something more fluid and architectural. This record from 1998 finds them at their most open and assured, stretching structure until it feels more like language than form. 'TNT' begins in motion, brushed drums and muted brass circling around each other like a jazz ensemble glimpsed through fog. 'Swung from the Gutters' and 'Ten-Day Interval' strip rhythm to a pulse, foregrounding tone and texture, while 'I Set My Face to the Hillside' folds in Latin inflection and soft melancholy. Every track feels self-contained yet linked - a study of depth and surprise. Rather than sprawl, Tortoise sculpt time - drawing beauty from patience and detail.
