Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. The odd light friction mark but being this pale, few will not show the off minor blemish.

Cat Number: 2310 217.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 113 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: One of the most brilliant albums of the decade and a feast for guitar and fuzz-guitar lovers, this album is a masterclass of entertainment and hardly surprising it’s so sort-after. Blistering string-work by Milne and a totally captivating issue. It’s failure to sell-well was a real surprise and this was the last album issued under this name. Tractor were formerly known as The Way We Live and again only one album was issued - both on Dandelion - both rare. Dandelion was formed by radio DJ John Peel. A labour of love for bands he admired at the time but he thought had small chance of a major label contract. Most failed to sell and this was little different. A highly sort-after label that came and went quickly, it dissolved in 1973. This copy is stunning, the record looks and plays like new and will rarely be offered in such condition as an original. The fragile cover is nice but has a small sticker pull on the front top right. Yes, I could have easily put a ‘fake’ price sticker over this, but sorry, this seller does not work like that and honesty is always the best policy. If any cover I offer has a sticker on it, rest assure, it will be as it was purchased and NOT stuck on to hide marks or damage. The record is the most important factor here, and its stunning and gave a blistering performance on play-grade. .

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: NOT taking into account the small sticker tear, I would grade this cover as EX. A slightly flimsy single format with no laminate protection, sticker pulls are quite common on Dandelion covers which did seem prone. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd.

Cover Front: Very mild rub traces but clean and uncreased. The biggest blemish is a fairly small sticker pull-tear near the top right corner. The curse of the unlaminated cover, quite why commonsense was not used more often when applying the things years ago, I don’t know. Still a nice front if that small mark can be lived-with. If it cannot or you are unsure, please do not bid.

Cover Back: Slight rubbing near the top and a tiny dimple-spot lower down. Under light, a faint rub trace can be seen around the record’s shape but this is as light as it gets and it not really ringwear as such. Generally clean and with hardly a noteworthy crease, this wear-prone back is again attractive.

Top Edge: Light rubbing only.

Bottom Edge: Light to light+ rubbing, slightly more towards corners.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with minimal wear and no feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A very nice spine: Solid, quite straight with minimal compression, the ends gently tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn and any rubbing minimal and light.

Corners: All corners have rubbed but not in a major way and all retain fine shape.

Cover Summary: A strong example of this very fragile and rare early 70’s cover, one that has a flaw and again, if this is an issue, please do not bid. This still attractive item should please many collectors but clearly not the perfectionist.

The Inner: The original 1072 coded polylined cover is included in fine EX condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: I cannot grade this superb album less than Mint(-), an ultra faint surface trace mark on side one has no sound at all and is not even easy to see being that faint and totally insignificant. A lovely visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This near immaculate record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A super-fi recording with exhilarating sound and performances. This really did give the tingle factor on play-grade and stopped me keying several times. This truly is a ‘lost’ classic and any rock or prog fan will treasure this. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will even match this, let alone outperform it I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – for me, the very best title ever on the rare John Peel Dandelion label. This record will prove near impossible to find better and can be strongly recommended. A truly magnificent album.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
