Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only two spindle marks on side one (one very small) and only a few more on side two. All evidence, including very impressive sound points to a copy played very little.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. A typical heavy pressing for the first Dawn issues.

Rarity & Info: Rare: and much rarer than even the price guides suggest. This is a genuine ‘lost’ acid-folk-psych classic, it sold very poorly indeed and almost sank without trace. I absolutely adore this album, it’s almost unique and features the wonderful Judy Dyble who featured on the Fairport Convention debut album. Comparing this to her previous vinyl appearance makes the Fairport album seem common in comparison – that I have found several times – but this is one of only three I have ever had. Some initial copies included a photograph insert – and this one has one. This set is in very fine condition, and as many collectors will already know, Dawn Records were notoriously variable in pressing quality, many noisy and poorly cut. This copy has one fairly small mark that emits a couple of light ticks but little else. It is the cleanest pressing I have yet heard and devoid of any inherent pressing noises or distortions that I certainly encountered on my one of the others I had. Some of the problem could be due to the album being a little too long for vinyl, this clocks in at around 47 minutes or so, the grooves are a little compressed which makes tracking the information more difficult. But all the vocals and music are clear and defined with no clipping or stressing to the more difficult parts and the general lack of crackle and background sounds makes a refreshing change. Two other rare Dawn classics spring to mind that can be equally difficult to find cleanly pressed – Comus ‘First Utterance’ and Donvan’s ‘HMS Donovan’ and this is just the same. Finding a better sounding copy of this record will prove beyond difficult and I would suggest, most will sound inferior, especially if played many times. I am sure this copy has not been played much at all, just the one small mark that is practically superficial anyway, is not bad for a fragile record now 43-years-old. There are no hidden nasties and this intolerant record was a genuine joy to listen-too. The cover has a press mark near the top left corner of the front, but that apart, equally fine. A ‘lost’ folk-psych classic now surfaced again to be enjoyed near it’s very (rare) best.

Brief Info: An absolute classic within the folk-psych genre with haunting beauty from former Fairport Convention vocalist Judy Dyble and Irish multi-instrumentalist Jackie McAuley, formerly of Them. This was a one-off album, that in a fair world, should have sold well, but it went practically unnoticed and was confined to the ‘lost’ vaults of history and was almost immediately deleted. A true diamond and precious record with tales of Olde England with a child-like charm to the songs, it will no doubt appeal to early Fairport and Donovan fans circa ‘HMS Donovan’. With use of unusual instruments blended with superb Dyble vocals, this has a psychedelic edge to the production with a genuine innocence to the material. This is an absolute delight and gets better with every listen. Such a shame the pressing quality often lets it down. Dawn, a subsidiary of the normally reliable Pye, were no Decca. Pressing noises and distortion are often rife on this album and seldom will a clean example be offered or heard. Well this one has no such pressing flaws, the one small mark has a couple of brief light clicks, any others are the odd sporadic tick and all the music is sharp, precise and clear. No vocal break-up or loss of focus and any surface sound minuscule in comparison to some Dawn albums I have heard. A rare album in numbers made or sold, rarer still that will offer enjoyable sound. The odd minor blemish is quite possibly the best anyone could hope for. The cover is attractive with lovely artwork, as stated above, a press mark is seen on the front and a little gentle creasing, but little detracts and is a work-of-art in it’s own right. The photographic is nice too – this came with this copy when I bought it. I can never vouch 100% for photo inserts being genuine, it it looks okay to me – I have only ever had one before, that being quite some time ago and have nothing to compare it with. So overall, a very impressive example – not quite for the perfectionist, but most collectors should enjoy this.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: only marked down a little from full excellent for the moderate press mark on the front. A gatefold format with front and rear laminate. The inside is matt finished. Printed and made in England. Includes a quite glossy photograph of the Dyble and McAuley.

Lamination – Front & Back: Lovely psych artwork and here looking very strong and attractive. Both sides retain a lovely shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting. Even under light, there are minimal traces of any dulling, a little rim impression on the back being near impossible to avoid with such a thick heavy record inside all these years. A small few light surface creases and a couple of small half moons that show little. The main blemish is a scuff press mark near the top left front corner area. The plus on this is, it has not affected the large coloured artwork area, so the eye is not drawn to it and visibility is only quite modest anyway, but it is present nonetheless. The artwork retains superb rich colour and really does look superb (as seen in close-up). So not flawless, but rarity dictates, it will never prove easy to find much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both sides in super condition with more incredible artwork, there is very little to fault. Any set-off traces are small and light. Note the vintage picture of Dennis The Menace as featured in the kid’s comic The Beano.

Top Edges: Very smooth and straight with minimal traces of any wear at all.

Bottom Edges: Largely as above - all edges have a little natural ‘curl’ to the ends where laminate try to contract (as it does). Often this will mean curl or lifting – the lifting has been avoided.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and sharp with barely any wear, any thickening or burring is tiny, barely any in fact. As stated, natural curl seen viewed end-on, when kept inside a quality protective sleeve, this could indeed dimish. Record enters on the back edge, these are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with a little compression and gentle tilt to right. A natural central crease has formed from opening that will be near impossible to avoid – any sinking of the text is as light as it gets. All the words fully present and easy to read, again seen in close-up. Folded square so the edges are parallel, the tilt means the right pair are not flush now, but others are. A little rubbing to the ends with a little shedding of the laminate near the very top. Again this is common on spines designed like this, but most-all is still intact with a trace of flaking near the top again.

Corners: The spine ends have rubbed, not too much really. The right corners have little wear and retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A beautifully designed cover with only a few clues to it’s great age. A strong all-round example and one that will prove difficult to find much better – locating it at all is never an easy task. Most of any blemishes hardly major and little detracts from this colourful and rare cover, it should please many collectors but not the highly discerning.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT(-): A robust polylined white inner, a little aged with one corner crease but barely any damage and few marks. The lining very clear and both window circles crisp and neat. All edges unsplit with no repairs. This is UK patented and has the ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text in blue.

The Photograph Insert(*): EXCELLENT(+): a sepia quite glossy photograph – again I state, this came with the record when I bought it, initially from the original owner, but I cannot 100% guarantee any photograph is original, so this is my disclaimer for this. It looks okay to me, but is purely only my opinion. The back is white with a few light marks, the front very clean with just the odd tiny tip crease and faint handling traces. It has a slightly aged smell as well which in it’s own way is encouraging I suppose.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy with modest plays I feel quite sure. One fairly small, but largely superficial mark on side one, any others on either side very few, fine and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light. Visually a very fine record that should please many collectors, but not quite the perfectionists (but how many of these ever will?)

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare Dawn original plays up to and most all above it’s splendid visual grading with very little to fault at all, knowing Dawn records well, it could be one of the best you will ever hear. At the risk of repeating myself, this is a VERY difficult album on vinyl. I am a very fussy listener and my LP12 brings out the bad as well the good in all records. The lack of pressing sounds is a huge bonus – this album is known for them and when present, they simply make you cringe. Owners of Comus’ ‘First Utterance’ tell me that is also an indifferent pressing and the Donovan albums on this label are also variable and rarely play anything like ‘silent’, some Man albums are similar too. The sound on this I found very enjoyable with both music and vocals focused, unclipped and with minimal traces of surface sound. Classic acid-folk with infectious melodies and songs. The one more viewable mark is largely ignored with just a couple of three quite light clicks. Any others on the rest of the album are very few as one-offs. Buying a ‘blind’ copy of this is always a risk – the best visual copy of this I ever saw had very loud pressing faults and distortion – this one doesn’t. Yes, the odd gentle reminder you are listening to a vintage record and not a squeaky clean digital alternative. But if anyone owns a much clean sounding example than this – well treasure it, because I doubt few will. I absolutely love this album and barely anything spoiled the experience at all. A very difficult record in all respects – but beautiful music – fragile and enchanting. I feel most realistic collectors will enjoy this wonderful and rare album, and it deserves strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
