Label Conditions: Both in very fine condition: clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle marks small, few and light. This another gem from the superb collection of very lightly played records, purchased from new by the one-and-only owner who played them very sparingly on a high quality system.

Cat Number: ILPS 9224.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 134 grams. A very good weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce as a first issue with the beautifully crafted, shaped cover. They hardly get earlier than this either, with the prized 1G mother/stamper and side one, the absolute first ever, and a 1R on side two, the next in the sequence. So often missing the shaped inner sleeve or with it badly split or damaged. This is a very fine example in most respects.

Brief Info: Studio album number six and again featuring the highly distinctive corner-cut cover as per the previous album ‘The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys’ (also on offer from the same collection). Although this one received more mixed reviews, it sold quite well. The songs are a little more downbeat but still are of fine quality. Just five are included. Like it’s predecessor, a beautiful cover, very colourful and vibrant and in superb condition as is the shaped, and often missing inner sleeve. The record also offers superb sound, just four or five light clicks on ‘Tragic Magic’ but little else at all and this is another top quality ‘Sterling’ pressing. For fans of this legendary band, this will be another welcome piece for the collection.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High: the format means creasing and laminate issues are common.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single, fully laminated format. It has that beautiful shaped construction with the diagonal cut opposite corners. Printed and made in England by Robor. Includes the Island shaped inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: A superb example of a quite fragile cover. The laminate both sides retains a superb shine, freshness and clarity. Any friction rubs or dulling is very mild indeed and only lightly seen on the front under angled light. The artwork on the front is very dark and intensely coloured which makes it highly revealing. So the fact it reveals little, and next to nothing with normal viewing should tell it’s own story. Incredibly, both sides have barely a crease to be seen at all and the back hardly any traces of dulling. All the laminate is fully adhered too with no lifting, peeling or blistering and what a difference that makes for maximum viewing pleasure. The edge strips where the laminate naturally ends a little short are all immaculately clean and unchipped. Any surface marks or impressions are very few and faint, a much better example of this fantastic and almost unique style cover will prove very difficult to find. The front graphic in particular is truly outstanding and finding this scarce original cover better will prove immensely difficult – arguably, this is undergraded.

Top Edge: Nigh on pristine with full laminate cover, this silky smooth to the fingertip with no scuffs.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and very sharp with no wear or feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. Being shaped, this entrance edge will seldom escape dinking or damage, even the cut corner is crisp and sharp.

Spine and Text: Absolutely immaculate – solid, straight with barely any real compression. No text was printed on this one and again the laminate in great condition and unscuffed.

Corners: A hugely unusual single cover with SIX corners – and all in superb condition, practically as made with no dinks and retaining ultra sharp and impressive shape. Finding one of these Traffic covers like this is difficult enough, but I have both almost the same.

Cover Summary: A wonderful example that sets the bar very high indeed. A much better all-round example of this very fragile 70’s cover will prove incredibly hard to find. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: this being somewhat critical on a fragile piece. A shaped unlined matt finished inner that has avoided any edge splits or tears. It has some record impression, but how many won’t have? The lack of creasing is good news and this one has aged little in real terms. Minimal traces of grubbiness with a little very low-level and faint crinkle. This includes the original ‘Basing Street’ Island address and was never lined.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks light and reasonably faint. A mild stylus mark on ‘Tragic Magic’ omits four or five light clicks but little else to fault on what is a lovely album. The unlined thin card inner never helpful to playing surfaces and few used replacements for this shaped cover. Any blemishes are purely superficial (bar the one of note mentioned, and this very minor indeed) and very light and this record offers superb sound. Visually a fine very early pressed record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: One of the first ever pressed and it plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault – I have mentioned the tiny few, light clicks already, and they are indeed very light. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly even registered and no pops or other clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing overall. Few copies will outperform this very lightly played one significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, withiin a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
