NEWSAGENT'S DESCRIPTION
This listing is for an original 1978 UK stereo pressing of Cynosure, the avant-garde jazz album by British saxophonist Trevor Watts and his String Ensemble, released by Ogun Records (OG 526). A co-founder of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, Watts was a central figure in British free improvisation, and Cynosure captures his evolving approach to composition, rhythmic structure, and collective improvisation through an unusually configured string-heavy ensemble.
The original LP's five pieces were recorded during rehearsals for a June 1976 concert at Notre Dame Hall in London. Watts' alto and soprano saxophones are joined by violin, cello, electric guitars, bass guitar, double bass, and drums, creating a distinctive meeting of free jazz, African-influenced rhythmic ideas, and dense string textures.
Issued by the legendary British avant-jazz label Ogun, Cynosure remains a compelling artifact of the experimental UK jazz underground. Housed in its original cardboard jacket along with the original inner sleeve, this record has been play tested and ultrasonically cleaned.
