The condition of the cover is VG+ with a "1550" stamp on the back cover (see photos), no cut-outs, seam splits or writing.  The condition of the disc is a clean EX+, very close to my top M- grade, and it plays great!

 Two of the guys in the Truth were also in Bob Smith’s band – you know, the Bob Smith of The Visit fame – and around the same time they were recording that psychedelic masterpiece, they were also asked to play with a husband and wife team from New York as The Truth.  They were signed by James Brown’s People label, run by former Motown label president Mickey Stevenson who, at that time, was trying to land some hipper “hippie” bands (anyone remember the Grodeck Whipperjenny?), and apparently the Truth won out, as it often does.  They even got to open for Blue Cheer at the Hollywood Palladium.  Not bad for a couple of flower children from New Yawk.

 Truth be told, about half of the Truth’s album sounds like the Mamas and the Papas at a gospel revival.  It’s when Bob Smith’s backing band kick up the fuzz guitars and bring out the sitar that this album really starts making a believer out of me.  “Thoughts” in particular is a veritable psychedelic mind melter, proving that if you can’t petition the Lord with prayer, a couple of fuzz guitars and a sitar will do just nicely.  The aptly titled “New York” sounds just like H.P. Lovecraft’s similarly titled “Country Boy and Bleecker Street” with its shuffling jazzy tempo and Fillmore Ballroom co-ed vocals.  And on the super catchy, super cute “Let It Out, Let It In,” the Truth sound remarkably like the Jefferson Airplane on some Marty Balin-penned Volunteers outtake.  And I bet Marty’d even take credit for it.

 So that’s the Truth, in a nutshell.  An as-of-yet undiscovered, but very hard to find one-off hippie psych project recorded with Bob Smith’s The Visit, which, on the other hand, has already found its cult following.  The Truth should, soon enough, follow.  And who knows?  Maybe it’ll even set you free.
