[-]by Mark JosephPart of the so-called quietcore movement in Britain, where folk meets pop. The Optimist is by turns delicate, impassioned, wistful, and androgynous. The lyrics come at the listener indirectly, quite a few of them refer to relationships in an angsty manner, and there are oblique ecological and anti-corporate references. It's as if After the Gold Rush (with its silver space ships) and the films The Man Who Fell to Earth and Bladerunner have all been put in a blender. Maybe this belies Ollie Knights' film studies background, or it's alien(ation) fallout from Radiohead. The standout track's are "The Door," which is infused with the sound of "Breathe" by Pink Floyd; "State of Things"; and "Mind Over Money." Elsewhere, "By TV Light" has the atmosphere of a sozzled aftermath, and "The Road" has some tasty slide work and a raga-like guitar motif. After repeat plays, the meanings of many of the songs are still a little obscure, but the feeling definitely grows. There seem to be traces of earthlings here and there – is that the spectral presence of the renowned Homosapien Paul Simon? Despite the acoustic setting this is almost as weird and original as Mercury Rev or early Captain Beefheart. File under: I'm not sure what's going on here, but it's interesting.

[-]by JT Griffith Often compared to Coldplay and Travis, Turin Brakes were an English, folk-inspired duo that hailed from Balham, London. Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian were friends in elementary school and decided to try out for the cathedral choir because it would perform in front of the Queen of England, which it eventually did. The two aspiring musicians, influenced by a unique range of artists that includedSebadoh, Truman's Water, Prince, and the Black Crowes, formed a band and recorded their freewheeling jam sessions. One of those sessions became their first release, The Door EP, which was released on Anvil in 1999. The State of Things EP followed the next year on the Source label. Turin Brakes began playing full-band live shows at the Reading and Leeds festivals. A third U.K.-only EP, Fight or Flight, was released later in 2000, as the band was opening for the likes of Kathryn Williams, Doves, and Lowgold. The debut Turin Brakes full-length, The Optimist LP, was released in 2001 through Astralwerks. 2003's successful Ether Song brought the group more fans and was followed by the more polished Jackinabox two years later. In 2010, Turin Brakes returned to it's melodic folk-inflected roots with the album Outbursts.price rating
