Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks. These hardly even show unless tilted towards angled light. This lovely record plays beautifully too with superb, fully focused, ultra clean sound.

Mode / Speed: Stereo (this one was not issued in mono) / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. A typically heavy pressing for this era of quality.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Formed in 1967 by singer/guitarist Marc Bolan, Tyrannosaurus Rex was originally envisioned as an electric sextet until a hire purchase company repossessed their equipment. Bolan was joined by percussionist Steve ‘Peregrine’ Took in an acoustic-based venture that combined his love of classic rock n roll with an affection for faerie mythology. Fans of this legend will know of his unusual quivering vocal style which often rendered his lyrics incomprehensible, but the effect was captivating and enchanting and the duo were ‘adopted’ by John Peel, at the time an underground ‘progressive’ music specialist. Peel tirelessly promoted the group and they had three minor hit singles. On this final album under this name, Bolan was joined by Mickey Finn on percussion and the band now had a more electric sound which paved the way perfectly for the electric pop and glam sound that became T-Rex. This Regal copy of this album is beautiful and should please most Bolan fans. Practically the first made with the prized G matrix on side one, and the next in the series R on the other. This beauty played little and offering superb sound. These vintage albums are seldom seen this clean and lightly used and this has suffered no abuse on heavy-tracking equipment.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and the merest whisker off Mint(-). A single fully laminated cover that includes the lyric insert. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. This imprint being near the bottom edge and difficult to see. It lies on the narrow exposed strip where the laminate ends short on the bottom edge. Unsually, this is fully present and unrubbed and the detail can be seen more clearly under a magnifier.

Lamination: Front & Back: Both side in superb condition. The laminate is very clean, clear, fresh and shiny, all is fully adhered too with no lifting. A few fine and faint hairline edge creases that few will ever avoid as a bare minimum. Even under light, there are hardly any traces of rim dulling with only the merest hint with close scrutiny. The man’s portrait looks lovely and never forget, this is now over 42-years-old. The top, bottom and left edges have unprotected strips and clearly vulnerable where the laminate ends short in manufacture. All are unchipped, clean and undamaged, hence the fragile imprint area on the back bottom edge is fully intact, and that is unusual.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both fully laminated with no scuffs and very smooth to the touch.

Right Edge(s), and Type: This entrance edge is neat and mostly sharp with minimal traces of thickening or burring. Guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A super spine and little short of as made. Solid but fairly thin, all the text is pristine and perfectly centred under the solid and uncracked laminate. Minimal compression and straight with just a small rub to the top corner tip.

Corners: Three exceptional with barely a hint of wear and only a small rub to the spine top as mentioned above. Better than excellent to near mint shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very impressive all-round example of this elusive early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This attractive item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white unlined inner with the SLRZ 1013 number on one corner, a practice very common with retailers to marry up record with cover on sale. The only blemish, a tiny nick to the top opening (and I do mean tiny). Barely any ageing or creasing and all edges unsplit with NO repairs.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): one mild and faint semi-crease on one corner off full Mint(-). A double-sided insert with lyrics on one and a graphic on the other, this is guaranteed original. Clean, fresh and attractive, also somewhat elusive, this is often missing altogether.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb visual copy, orginal and a very early pressed too. Very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. The grooves have interesting patterns which usually indicates high intensity and complex sound and in this case is true. Bolan’s vocal and guitar have amazing sound that is pure realism in the room. No wonder so many copies clip and distort with so many played on vintage record players, often mono – this record was the first NOT to be issued in the single channel mode, so many would have still been subjected to such treatment. This album is highly intolerant of those heavy thick needles that caused havoc, shredding those delicate groove walls and ruining the clarity of the sound. Visually a lovely record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage Regal Zonophone record plays up to it’s very high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Barely any surface sounds and no pops and just one click was noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits my strongest recommendation. This is a beauty for the connoisseur Bolan fan.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
