Tyrannosaurus Rex : My People Were Fair... 1G / 1G 1st Stereo Press 1968 Regal Zonophone

This first pressing plays with stunning audio quality across both sides and if I had to rate the clarity out of 10 I would say 10!  There is no background static and all I heard having listened to every track in full was one click on the 'vocal' at the end of S1 and a couple of light crackly sounds on the same track.  S1 is superb and S2 is superb plus plus!  The vinyl has a stunning visual 'look' and it is obvious it has hardly been played based on the audio and the minimal spindle wear.

The laminated G & L flipback cover is in excellent condition with very little wear and the lyric insert is 'as new'!  The original inner sleeve is also in great shape.

This first pressing was released on the red Regal Zonophone label with a 1G/1G matrix.  The stampers do not get much earlier than G1/A1 either!  A stunning album that has been preserved so well over the last 54 years.

Visual description

The vinyl is in lovely condition and to think it is very nearly 55 years old!  It has a stunning glossy sheen with no marks or scratches and all I can see under a strong light are a few very faint sleeve removal hairlines.  The run out grooves are very clean as are the labels.  There is only a little spindle wear on the S1 label and barely any on S2.  The KT tax stamp can easily be seen on the S2 label.

Play grading  

The intro on 'Hot Rod Mama' has no 'background' at all, the clarity is exceptional, and Bolan's opening vocal is of the same high end standard.  This acoustic track continues in the same precise way to the very end of the fade out and 'as new' sums it up perfectly.  A sublime Mint start to the album.  Well I did say the vinyl was visually stunning!

'Scenescof' is another easy one to grade.  From start to finish there is not even one dust tick let alone anything worse.  Mint

'Child Star' is so close to that.  At the end of the fifth line there is one static click type sound but aside from there is no other intrusion so I will grade as Near Mint accordingly.

'Strange Orchestra's' again plays with incredible clarity and what is so impressive is that so far there is no background static getting in the way of the audio.  The playback is so clean and here I heard just one light tick.  Mint-

'Chateau In Virginia Waters' provides more evidence of a vinyl so well preserved and plays with impeccable quality throughout with no intrusion.  Mint again.

The intro on the 'Dwarfish Trumpet Blues' is 'as new' and then the first line just has a couple of successive crackle sounds although they are quiet.  From then on it plays with stunning precision until the 'trippy' vocal ending which has just one click but no background static.  I will say Ex+ but as is often the case the vast majority is much better than that :-)

The acoustic intro on 'Mustang Ford' plays perfectly and this standard does not drop as it continues.  The clarity again is as good as it was when first pressed and I am 100% confident in grading this as Mint such is the quality.

'Afghan Woman' is more or less perfect with just one static tick at the end of the fade out.  Let's say Mint-

'Knight' and 'Graceful Fat Sheba' both play with remarkable clarity and precision with just one very light tick on each.  Mint- is again fully deserved.

'Weilder Of Words' plays with stunning sonic quality and again there is no intrusion on the audio.  A lot going on here and yet each note can be heard so easily.  A superb Mint version.

'Frowning Of Atahuallpa' plays with sublime quality through every section and there is no inner groove distortion.  John Peel's poem near the end plays very clearly with just a couple of ticks and the final vocal ends the album with great precision once more.  A Mint- finish to what is a bizarre album in so many ways!  Of its time that's for sure.

In summary this first pressing plays with supreme quality with barely any intrusion.  Almost zero!  A couple of light crackle moments and one click on the quirky ending to 'Dwarfish Trumpet Blues' but in all honesty you cannot fault the sonic quality on offer here.  A visually stunning album that delivers on so many levels.  The clarity of sound is just stunning.

The Cover, Lyric Inner & Inner Sleeve

 The G & L Patents pending cover is in great condition with very little wear.  The edges and thin pinched spine are so clean and only the bottom two corners have a small amount of wear / creasing.  The opening edge is close to perfect with hardly any handling wear and the laminated front cover is unmarked with just a handful of faint creases next to the spine.  The back cover is in lovely condition when you consider it isn't laminated.  The white background is very clean with hardly any marking and any 'spotting' that is there is so faint anyway.  The flipbacks remain 100% attached to the cover and have hardly any of the marking on the edges that you so often see.  It has just the minor creasing on the bottom two corners as stated and just a touch of ringwear near the top.  A fine example overall.

The lyric inner is 'as new' and looks like it has never been removed from the cover!  The Patents Applied For inner sleeve has no side splits or tears, minimal creasing and hardly any age related fading.

Play tested on my Rega P2 Turntable / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

This record has been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
