Ultra rare gem containing amazing experimental works, many never again released. The most important track here is Sky, Horse And Death, the earliest piece of electronic tape music composed in Asia, originally made for a radio play in 1954; it was sourced from recordings of dripping water, prepared piano, bird songs, horses neighing, a female voice, and snapping whips. Instrumentation on the other works ranges from Japanese traditional instruments biwa (plucked lute) and shakuhachi (bamboo flute), to the bandoneon (a hybrid accordian-organ more commonly used in classical tango, but also used contemporarily by Astor Piazzolla and Gordon Mumma), to electronics. Overall an excellent lp and deservedly among the most sought after Takemitsu recordings.

artist info from album notes:
Takemitsu was trained as a guitarist, earned praise and encouragement from Stravinsky early in his career, and became influenced by John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, Webern, Messiaen, and Debussy; his compositions combined traditional Japanese music with avant garde western techniques such as electronic music, indeterminacy, graphic notation, and serialism, he is associated with the school of early electronic composers in Japan that included Yuji Takahashi, Makoto Moroi, Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, Michael Ranta, and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and he scored dozens of films working with legendary Japanese directors Masaki Kobayashi, Hiroshi Teshigahara, Masahiro Shinoda, and Akira Kurosawa. Should be of interest to fans of early electronic composers like Pierre Schaeffer, Luc Ferrari, Pierre Henry, Ilhan Mimaroglu, Rune Lindblad, and Dick Raiijmakers.
