Robert Rauschenberg designed the album cover for Talking Heads’ “Speaking in Tongues.” Rauschenberg’s cover, consists of three spinning plastic discs and a clear vinyl LP, all packed in a vacu-form clamshell.
This edition is infamous among collectors for manufacturing nightmares and preservation issues. While it won a Grammy for Best Album Package, the fragile PVC clamshell packaging is prone to heavy off-gassing and severe yellowing over time, and the chemical reactions often cause the clear vinyl to stick to the inner sleeves and skip when played.
CONDITION - PLEASE READ AND CONSIDER ALL THE FAULTS LISTED BELOW BEFORE CONSIDERING BUYING THIS RECORD
This copy of “Speaking in Tongues” suffers from the well documented issues listed above. The record skips on four occasions, on track 2 side 1, track 3 side 1 (twice) and track 1 side 2. The clamshell case is yellowed and brittle with a couple of broken areas and a hole punch to the top right hand corner. The spinning wheels are in pretty good condition and have not stuck to the vinyl as far as I am aware.
