WHY THESE TWO RECORDS...

Tangerine Dream, the German electronic music group, released their debut album Electronic Meditation in June 1970. It is the only Tangerine Dream album to feature the line-up of Edgar Froese, Klaus Schulze and Conrad Schnitzler. Their mid-70s work has been profoundly influential in the development of electronic music styles such as new age and electronic dance music. For RSD Black Friday, Varese Sarabande re-issued Electronic Meditation in a special gatefold jacket.

In 1978 the trio of Peter Baumann, Edgar Froese and Christopher Franke split up, with Baumann leaving to pursue a solo career. Perhaps it was due to Baumann's departure that the remaining duo decided a new direction was in order. Cyclone is quite notably the first Tangerine Dream album to feature lyrics and vocals. Their move toward more vocal-based tracks hurt their reputation in the eyes of loyal fans, who m criticized Cyclone heavily.

TD also began using rock n rook’s most prominent instrument: the guitar. Thus, Cyclone brought the psychedelics and the rock guitar, similar to Pink Floyd, rather than another assemblage of total experimental trance-inducing electronic music. And while that essence of Tangerine Dream remained in Cyclone, it just took on a new guise.

With this purchase, you get two musical directions with a core of evolving musicians from 1970 to 1978. Makes great juxtaposition playing these side by side or one after the other, depending on your set-up.
