Description
Tchaikovsky Symphony 5 Moscow Sessions Sheffield Lab
Audiophile label Sheffield Lab’s most ambitious project, “The Moscow Sessions” were recorded in Moscow in 1986 with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra and conductors Lawrence Leighton Smith, and Dimitri Kitayenko. The program is of Russian and American works with Kitayenko conducting the American pieces, and Smith, the Russian. The latter include Tchaikovsky “Symphony 5”, Shostakovitch “Symphony No. 1” and “Festive Overture” and shorter works by Glinka, Glazunov and Mussorgsky. Copeland’s “Appalachian Spring”, Piston’s “Incredible Flautist”, the Barber “First Essay for Orchestra” and others by Ives, Gershwin and Griffes, complete the program. A three record set on the Sheffield Lab Label (TLP 1000), the records are of excellent appearance, and play and sound superb. The box and notes are also excellent.
