Tenebrae was a 1983 giallo-style horror thriller from noted Italian director Dario Argento (Suspiria, Deep Red).
Anthony Franciosa stars as a successful novelist promoting his new horror novel in Rome, only to discover that a copycat killer is taking inspiration from his new novel in the worst kind of way....
Arguably Argento's last masterpiece before his late-career decline, Tenebrae is a tense, bloody and stylish film, made all the more fascinating by the electronic-tinged prog-rock score composed and performed by ex-Goblin members Claudio Simonetti (keyboards), Massimo Morante (guitars) and Fabio Pignatelli (bass).
Also starring John Saxon, Argento's then wife Daria Nicolodi, and Giuliano Gemma, 'Tenebrae' was a controversial film upon it's release, and was even listed as one of the notorious 'video nasties' by British morality crusaders during the early-eighties moral panic over horror films available on VHS. Thankfully, sense was restored some years later, 'Tenebrae' was eventually issued uncut, and critics now consider it something of a genre classic due to it's bold set-pieces, the challenging themes of violence and sexuality, the harshly-lit exteriors (most unusually for a horror film, most of the action is set during daytime) and Argento's supremely stylish direction.
Although issued under the name Simonetti-Pignatelli-Morante, this is essentially a Goblin album, and the soundtrack ranks amongst the finest albums produced by the Italian horror soundtrack legends.
Goblin became famous around the world for soundtracking Dario Argento's classic works, with the stylish horror-thriller 'Deep Red' and the fantastic fantasy shocker 'Suspiria' amongst their best known works, and their career also parallels that of Argento - 'Tenebrae' is arguably the last great work created by either.
Recommended to fans of Argento and Goblin's classic-era albums, 'Tenebrae' is that rare kind of soundtrack album that can be enjoyed both as part of the film and on it's own terms. Key tracks include the title piece - In 2007 it was sampled by French dance-rock outfit Justice on their debut album 'Cross' - the groovy 'Lesbo', the hair-raising keyboard-driven 'Flashing' and the haunting 'Jane Mirror Theme'.
